Actually thought he did ok in the second Q3 run. The mercedes and ferrari are very close to each other and not close at all to the front.

Its more about Lewis potentially finding a solution to the sensitive tire issues in Barcelona which Allison said he was sending an email to the team about. While Russell is winning the head to head its by fine margins, 0.063 secs here

Russell and Lewis said they made changes to help with race pace tomorrow, Shovlin saying their race pace wasnt quite on a par with McLaren so they made some changes that costed them a bit in quali. Will be interesting tomorrow, Leclerc thinks Ferrari might be faster with the changes they made and Hamilton thinks he can get past Sainz

If the Silverstone race improvements don't bring Mercedes half a second or at least 0.400, then all the talk of improvements has been greatly overstated.

Also remember Lewis is 39 years old. Russell should be beating him him in Q. Would be shame if he wasn't!

The f1 driver model has a downward adjustment for age. Russell basically is at peak performance and Lewis has lost about 0.25% percent peformance. These units are points per race though.. Which is some arbitrary unit for these driver models that don't directly translate into qualifying pace. However the point is that Russell should have a massive advantage racing against a forty year old Lewis Hamilton.

Merc's in seasons development regularly puts Ferrari to shame. So it's no surprise.
