Re: Vodafone McLaren Team 2012

I would sum the weekend up in terms of 'Fastest' between Ferrari, RBR and Macca in the following way:

Speedtrap (Top speed): Ferrari
Fastest Lap: Mclaren Button
Fastest stint: Ferrari (Alonso in the 2nd stint, correct me if im wrong Ray, this is purely subjective)
Fastest pit stop: ????
Fastest Race: RBR Vettel
Best Start: RBR Webber
Fastest Qualifier: RBR Vettel

I think what we see is that maybe mclaren need to think of race pace over qualifying result, it is clearly where ferrari gain positions. Or maybe they do think like that, but if that was the case i would have to say something is very broken at mclaren, and i'm a cold bastard and point the finger at Sam Michael.

The pit stop that included the steering wheel change was certainly the most impressive of the weekend.

That isn't opinion, its fact isn't it? Fastest lap, the car was the fastest car on the track all day by the measurement over 1 lap intervals over the entire race. Isn't that the whole point of measuring the fastest lap?

what a team would learn from this is that in those conditions, with those specific tyre compounds that the car is fastest, and on the other side, they really need to figure out why the performance dies.
No arguing with the stopwatch for sure, however since 2008 McLaren have not built a car of sufficient pace and consistent performance to mount a winning championship challenge, hence the teams dependence on typically accentuating the positive(s) from a weekend in David Brailford-esq manner. However the 'marginal gains' that Mr Brailford seeks, tend to result in wins of cycling's prestigious tours.

Just when we think Mclaren have had every technical failure you can get, they continue to surprise us :)
Extremely impressive change though! talk about coordination.

Agree n smikle, I feel he would be better poised at Red Bull in Webbers seat.......... or even at Lotus alongside Raikonnen.

This team needs a purge. It has gotten to big and complicated. A racing team should be concerned with Winning only, and ever since they have branched out into the automotive manufacturing world they have suffered for consistency and reliability.

Whitmarsh isnt radical enough to be a team boss. You dont win championships by being mr nice guy and trying to avoid upsetting people. You get in peoples faces, Briatore style; when your driver leaks sensitive information, you make him sit on the pit wall and let Oliver Turvey trundle around the track for a race. When drivers of the calibre of Hamilton look to move outside your team, you move mountains to entice them to stay.

Is it Whitmarsh who should pay or no? Who? Who is responsible ultimately? Is there a leadership disfunction?

They're back to the Raikkonen era, when they had tons of issues and cost their drivers wins/titles.

And I also felt gutted for Hamilton, all in all he's a great driver and deserves a proper car that can finish races, especially when it is capable of winning races.

Montezemolo's leadership, is the kind of conversation someone at McLaren, ought to be having with someone at McLaren!

Nice that someone has mentioned the Raikkonen era. Just yesterday I was thinking that 2012 was even worse than 2005 reliability wise for McLaren, which was horrible. I'm sure it had a net effect on Raikkonen deciding to move from McLaren to Ferrari. And now Lewis moves away from McLaren too.

The car was so reliable in winter testing, all practice sessions and all qualifying sessions, but when its race day its another story. I'm thinking take the car out of Parc Ferme, change everything on the car and start from the pit lane with a full race set up, least you got a chance of points :)

Though McLaren have got to stop kidding themselves when they say its always bad luck, thats the biggest worry.
