I am not a fan of this sprint structure. I am positive the sprint race will be a train. I do think we need to be wary as if the fight at the front is exciting, we should not get ahead of ourselves and declare this a success.

Competitive seasons in F1 are a rare with periods of domination more pronounced. A sprint structure only works when all cars are equal and there is nothing to choose between them. It works for Formula 2 because the cars are very, very close. In F1 passes for the lead happen mostly in pit-stops or diagrammatic errors which are rare.

Only saw the last 10 minutes, what were the long race pace of red bull and Merc like? Heard the Mercs ran well on old softs.
Yep. But Max was lapping 1 second/lap faster than Lewis on hards though.

Mercedes already did low-fuel "sprint style" longruns in FP1, though, while Red Bull was practicing for the actual race. May very well have been the other way around now

If the W series is anything to go by there might be some interest in the last 2/3 laps of THE SPRINT if some drivers can't keep the tyres alive.

Aside from the final corner, Max gains hugely on all other corners but Hamilton trashes him on the straights

And the high speed corners as well it seems!

...hard to pass if you are not fast on the straights. Such could also lead to frustration induced divebombs. The sprint start will be critical.

Re. The tow, didn't Max follow Lewis out of the pits and run directly behind him in Q3, so if Lewis benefited from a tow off of Bottas, then Max would have been getting a tow from Lewis?
IIRC yes on the first run in Q3 but for the 2nd run Max was further back.
On second lap Verstappen had around same distance to leclerc as hamilton did to bottas, so it evens out more or less.

Those corners are all flat out and effectively a straight line. In non flat corners Verstappen is obviously faster, apart from the slow T16.

This whole experience has made me realise how much I enjoyed the FP1 FP2 FP3 structure and what the teams evaluated in each session, and when in each session.

Red Bull seems to blister the front rights, but keeps going without much difficulties.

Will be interesting. I think the prevailing theory for Hamilton being on pole was tow plus cooling temps meant Red Bull understeered more. So as THE SPRINT is going to be in cooling conditions again could be Merc look better relative to Red Bull again. I think THE SPRINT will pretty much be decided by Wellington straight/Brooklands lap 1.
Re. The tow, didn't Max follow Lewis out of the pits and run directly behind him in Q3, so if Lewis benefited from a tow off of Bottas, then Max would have been getting a tow from Lewis?
Exactly this, but people can't help but say Bottas sacrificed himself for Lewis. All Bottas did was went out first, he didn't do anything other than that to help Lewis.

yea, If the format stays as it is, astute fans will learn nothing from FP1, and FP2. The teams don't have time to do much more than tire set-up runs. If we kept this format, I think FP1 should be like 2 hrs so teams have time to test out updates, compare and contrast set-ups etc.

If they keep it like this Fans will see nothing, because all that will be done by the simulator guys behind closed doors. Not to mention The wealthy teams with complex simulators will have a real edge over those that don't.

Holy ---, I missed MW´s death

Btw, I rarely watch Sky but today I watched GP2 with them and now the F1 pre show started and, boy, how cringeworthy Chandok´s analysis of Ham vs VER QLF is.... It would gather much more insight just by watching the f1 video that I linked before

I don't watch sky but when he was with channel 4 I found Chandhock to be engaging and knowledgable. Maybe some editorial decisions affect his content.
