Its just too cold to dry out. So no hope for the dry setup cars. Good hope for Russell. Saying all that, I wonder how the pace will be between the cars when they put the full wet on? We only saw the inters driven at any speed yesterday.
Russell did a phenomenal job yesterday, but the reason he came up as high as P2 was his superb S1 and high risk through Eau Rouge. Hamilton was slightly quicker in S2 already, and some 4 tenths in S3, not to mention Max. The Williams is still a slower car than the Merc and RB, and that will show today. Would of course be awesome if he could compete with them all race, but I would not get my hopes up too much.
Yeah true. With Norris well down, Russell has a genuine chance at a podium. Being 7 tenths quicker than 4th place, surely that give Russell a chance to hold on to a decent result. Although doing 1 lap in qualy is quite different to doing 40+ in the race. We shall see. Just hope its not too wet to have safety car starts and red flags.

I'm at the track, it's raining very lightly but continously.

I do not think Russell will go backwards as quickly as some think. He will be in front by right and not have to allow leaders to pass, it will be their job to pass a car with plenty of downforce on wet corners as well as to fly by on the straight. Speed on the straight must account for speed and line out of the previous corner and slowing and finding the line into the next corner, when fighting russells car, which seems to have it sorted, if it stays wet of course.

Also, Russells car is used to fighting in tight traffic not running ahead, and MAY be set up more conservatively so could be less upset by passing cars than they will be by his.

Race sets, in case it is dry

It would be good if they released all the inter and wet tyres used and how many laps each set had done.
according to my own notes, it should be like this (laps completed per set in brackets)

About Russel it is important to say that his nickname "Mr. Saturday" is not going from nowhere ;) His racecraft is still a big question, since he is known from losing a lot of places after start of the races...

But how much of this is because he is starting far in front of where he should be? 'Better' cars are going to be better starters than those the Williams should be mixing with

Exactly right. Granted he’s made some mistakes in a few situations (though if you tell me one single driver who hasn’t, then you’d be lying through your teeth) but more often than not he’s up against drivers in somewhat better machinery when he puts his car halfway up the grid.

I do expect him to go backwards if it’s not pretty wet during the race, but if so it’s no indication of his skill as a race driver. If Hamilton is behind him, I think he’ll get done on one of the long straights given the drag differential.

Looking at the weather and taking into account for many days it's said rain on both days... I don't totally understand the setup of Mercedes.

It's not like they needed to gamble for a win. They should have just gone similar to their main competitor and then won in other ways more consistent than flipping a coin on the weather.

It is a fair point, but you could say the same for, say, Trulli. In the days where overtaking was so much harder, that set up the Trulli train, but part of it was nevertheless Jarno being higher up than he should have been. Always wondered what would have happened if he got to drive the 2005/2006 Renault - suspect he might have had quite a few poles but could he have hung onto them with a decent car underneath him? Or was he truly (no pun intended) just no good in the race and Fernando would have him every time?

The proof for Russell will come when he gets to drive a car that deserves to be at the front. In the one example we’ve had of that, he pulled away and was very comfortable out front, so I suspect he’ll be ok. It may also depend it next year’s tyres allow drivers to push like quali throughout a stint.

Just read on another forum there is a 3-hour race limit this year. That could make today incredibly disappointing for us all.

Starting on a wet track and it drying up later in the race would be amazing. Seeing all conditions on all sets and with some strategy tweaks.

It was actually very good in F2. They used to call him “the accountant” back then.

Maybe they have gone somewhere in the middle? We always get rain forecasts at Spa and most of the time it doesn't appear.

Just as PDR said "Spa can bite at any second" the camera switches to Perez in the wall, looks like he won't start the race.
