In Barcelona, Ricciardo was asked if he had already spoken to McLaren about 2023. His answer: "No, we don't. But I'm sure we'll talk before the summer break."

DISPLAY
Ricciardo: Apparently no contract for 2023

Demand: Why do you have to speak at all if it's supposed to be a three-year contract? "That's right," Ricciardo replies, embarrassed. "You just made me answer something I shouldn't be answering. Good point."

This suggests that it may not be a straight three-year deal after all, but more of a two-year deal that may still have options for an extension. For outsiders, this is pure speculation at this point in time.

Brown compares the situation at McLaren with that at Red Bull, where Max Verstappen is the clear number 1, and Ferrari, where Carlos Sainz has been at a disadvantage against Charles Leclerc in 2022: "There are these gaps between teammates. Lando is one of the best drivers the world. It speaks for him too and shows how good he is when you see the distance."

It seems like Lando is still not feeling great. His media activities for today were all canceled, but he hopes he will feel good enough to race by the time the race weekend arrives.

Brown said not long ago they have a couple of years left with Dan.

"“Daniel, we have another couple [of] years with him.”"

https://www.planetf1.com/news/daniel-ri ... ren-plans/

Seidl said this last week to the Age newspaper in Australia

"“We have a contract in place with Daniel until the end of next year, plus options, which means we are both in a very good place. We want to make this journey we are on together a very successful one,” Seidl told The Age"

Also Dan just signed a multiyear deal with a primary sponsor of McLaren, OKX

Given all this it doesn't make sense to me that they plan on sacking him.

There are rumors that the contract was only for 2 years + 1 year option and RIC recently admitted he and McL need to talk during the summer. The Race is ofc clickbaity so...
https://the-race.com/formula-1/ricciard ... 23-doubts/

Also recent comments from Zak about missed expectations do not look good:
"Short of Monza and a few races, [the partnership] has not met his or our expectations of what we were expecting," said Brown.
"I think all you can do is keep working hard as a team, keep communications going, keep pushing and hope that whatever is not clicking at the moment, clicks shortly."
https://racingnews365.com/mclaren-boss- ... -struggles

RIC is quite expensive. He is such a great personality, but as long as he is not at least close to Lando, I think there is a good chance of him leaving McL after this season. I also think he seemed to be pretty close to Lando multiple times this year, just the last race was such a buzzkill that everyone forgot about it. Fingers crossed he can pull something out of the hat fast.

I’m not sure the 2 + 1 year contract is a rumour but more as a fact. I’m sure it was Ricciardo himself who said it was a 2 + 1 contract at the Mclaren launch at the beginning of last season?

Is that linked in any way to the removal of Senna's logo from Williams after 2021 season, or that's independent decision made by McLaren?

Apparently Dan just confirmed his contract is 3 years until the end of 2023. Seidl mentioned the plus an option part previously. Sounds pretty relaxed about Zak's comments.

I think that Dan won't be happy, as much as he sounds relaxed he's a guy who is very good about making the best out of a bad situation, but I doubt he's under any illusions that this is a bad stage of his career. All of his moves post RB just seemed not to have worked out for him.

He's still a very useful asset though, popular and quite marketable so his cost is mitigated to some extent. You can't look at his salary so easily and say he's overpaid as there will be agreements in there regarding image rights and Mclaren will be paying $15m in part for the commercial aspects he brings to the team and not just the driving. Would anyone be surprised if his signing didn't attract an extra $7.5m worth of sponsorship, or help get the types of sponsors we wanted?

I don't think he's good value right now but I don't think he's bad value either, and I like having him around. If he has to make a call to get a win or another splendid result for Mclaren, he won't let pressure get to him and if the car feels good on the day then he has the racecraft chops to race hard with anyone.

Can't tell. All I know is that I think it's more suiting to have him remembered on the team that helped him make history rather than the team that killed him.

Turns out there was an issue with Daniels car that hurt his performance in Spain. And it’s been fixed for Monaco.
