Vodafone McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Are those revised barge boards? Difficult to see on older pictures, but it look to me as the back end of the "triangle" has been extended further down the floor.

Whitmarsh has absolutely no DDRS in spa, but that rear wing looks very different to the old spec.

Which was to be expected due the lower requirment of df. Essentially the gills are reduced which ferrari also did.

Aswell as that, but I was thinking the long slim panel which seems to go from the leading edge of the lower plane, to the beam wing?

Now that is why they haven't added the flow conditioners: they just added additional bodywork on top of the sidepod in which the airflow is conditioned inbetween. Question what is better: more control over less air volume (this solution) or vice versa?

That would be why the flow conditioners have vanished then...

I wonder if they are wing shaped, and designed to generate balance neutral downforce in the middle of the car. Clever thinking if so!

More modifications to RW endplate strakes (no surprise really given the new RW). Strakes have been moved up so that the lowest strake is now fully above the top of the diffuser, in Hungary they were still dangling around in the middle of it. Small change but anything could be useful!

I am not entirely convinced this is the better solution generally speaking: the air passing inbetween the sidepod and that "horizontal conditioner" (by lack of a better name...) certainly is much better redirected, but the volume also is less.

I made a very quick impression of what I think they are trying to achieve:

Image

red are the new winglets, blue is the airflow. Basicilly the winglets are there to seperate the airflow so that air above the horizontal conditioner gets better redirected. What I think is that they are trying not only to condition the airflow, but also speed it up through the gap between the conditioner and the sidepod. Behind the horizontal conditioner and above the lower airflow should be a low pressure zone in which the top airflow gets back sucked in. Atleast that is what I can make of it.
