Kimi is not the same kimi as in 2007. He's shown brilliance and speed, no discussion there.
Him slicing through eau rouge in spa in almost superhuman abilities still stands grafted in my mind.
I think Ferrari are unable or unwilling to give Kimi the car he wants. He hates understeer and we often hear him complaining of understeer on the radio etc. Perhaps the Ferrari is front limited in an attempt to protect the rear tyres (perhaps all current cars are like this to a degree). If that's the case, then Kimi will continue to struggle.
true, he's complaining a lot about that. though a lot of times i really can't make out anything from what he's babbling through the radio, it is 9/10 times exactly that, AND if it's not oversteer, it's the tires.
but even though i think Ferrari should do something to give him a car more to his liking,
on the other side the question also is; the rest of the field has the same tires and have to deal with the same issues.
why can't kimi cope?
To be very honest, this is not something that's new with Kimi Raikkonen. He's
always been a driver that's had to get a car to work for him rather than adapt to what's given to him. Mind you, we are talking small details but when the competition is so fierce it tends to get magnified.
Also, if I am to put it bluntly, the Formula 1 fraternity and fans have been more attracted to his persona than his sheer capability. He, in my opinion is one of those that is quite stunning when all the stars align but that doesn't happen very often for any sportsman. It did for Kimi between 2005-08 (first half) and then in his Lotus stint.
Also, in my humble opinion he is past his second best days as well and it's about time Ferrari replace him with someone, may be anyone. I find it amusing when people say Perez/Grosjean won't be an upgrade on him. It might be true, but did any of us ever think Bottas would keep Hamilton so honest in a Merc? Ferrari have tried keeping him, they might as well try someone else now. I find all this warming the seat for Leclerc/Giovinazzi talk juvenile. Also, Verstappen and Ricciardo might stick with RBR beyond 2019 as well.. It will all depend on the car.
