Maybe it's not about McLaren gains, but RedBull losses? What I mean is, RB sacrified some of their Qualify advantage setting car for race-pace optimisation? In Australia RB (at least Vettel's one :)) was MUCH better than McL in Q, but in the race the advantage was not so obvious. Maybe Horner wanted it the other way round this time? :p

He also said he expected the Red Bulls to be 0.5 seconds quicker in quali... There's a certain swagger about the McLaren drivers and team at the moment so I wouldn't count them out just yet.

Wouldn't a track like this favour a RB, especially as they now have their KERS? I know better understanding of set up etc has a considerable effect, but surely as both rejected the new diffuser, how could they reduce it to that little?
I think that in Australia with Vettel's car Red Bull just hit the perfect storm of car, tyre, driver and circuit coming together in an unbeatable combination. In Malaysia we're seeing more typical pace from the Red Bull, plus McLaren have improved their setup and brought some small improvements. So maybe McLaren have gained 0.4s and Red Bull have lost 0.3s. Not from KERS or anything they've done, just because they over-performed in Australia.

Yes, I too Believe that RedBull has a tyre saving settup. It's not normal for another driver to see a 5 tenths advantage to RBR that just disappears come qually.

They've changed the pole position slot from the left side of the grid to the right side. Drivers were fearing that if the track were to collect marbles they'll collect greatly on the left hand side of the track.

Yes, the left hand side used to be pole position. That's actually the dirty side in Sepang, as people come off the last corner on the right before they gradually pull to the left. (On a lap, where they'd be when they pass pole position, they're still to the right). But it compromises the entry into T1. But not the defense. Go figure. SIgh.

Did anyone else think that Maldonado not getting out of Q3 seemed strange? He looked all set to knock Barrichello out of Q2 then made a pigs ear of turn 15. Maybe I'm just reading too much into this but I wonder if Williams are trying to keep Barrichello happy so he stays? There are reports circulating that he is really struggling with the technology and is none too happy.

So, what odds on their being a coming together between Vettel and Hamilton during the race? Especially thinking about the first turn complex on lap 1 or 2...

None whatsoever. Vettel will likely show everyone a clean pair of heels, much like what happened in Australia. Now a smash between Hamilton and Webber. Now that is a real possibility.

I am more concerned with the proximity of the Torro Rosso's to Schumacher!

RedBull look fragile to me.their KERs is not half what Mclaren has and I suspect at least one of the two RB7 will have to switch it of very soon.
Mclaren will be there no doubt. It will be a hard days work for Vettel.

LH: We’ve come here with an upgrade package that didn’t quite deliver what we had hoped, so we took it off as we thought that it would take us one step backwards. We realised that the Australian package worked just as well. I don’t know why they are slow here. I have some idea but I will not say anything.
Interesting statement from Hamilton there.I wonder whats his explanation to why RB isnt that strong here.

Wonder if the FIA have had a quiet word with them about their car and they've been forced to change something...?
