McLaren MP4-27 Mercedes (pre-launch speculation)

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Button will take days 1 and 2 for McLaren; Hamilton days 3 and 4 of the February 7-10 test.

I seem to remember them alternating by the day last year. i.e. JB-LH-JB-LH. Or it could have been the other way around. And I seem to remember Paffet got a few days in as well, no?

The McLaren MP4-27 which will be presented Feb. 1 in Woking will have a rear wing revolutionary. Nothing could be seen even now in the circus. This wing was designed to work with the best possible discharges in high position and make yoo can effectively use the DRS.

i agree, double diffusers were banned at the end of 2010, but in 2009 the double diffuser made the difference. teams with kers failed that year. in 2010, the exhausts were close to the diffuser, in 2011 they were futher. do you understand my point of you?

last year:

McLaren’s pre-season test schedule:
Valencia (tyre test using MP4-25 chassis)
February 1 - Gary Paffett
February 2 - Lewis Hamilton
February 3 - Jenson Button

Jerez (first scheduled run for MP4-26)
February 10 - Lewis Hamilton
February 11 - Jenson Button
February 12 - Lewis Hamilton
February 13 - Jenson Button

Barcelona
February 18-19 - Jenson Button
February 20-21 - Lewis Hamilton

Bahrain
March 3 - Jenson Button
March 4 - Lewis Hamilton
March 5 - Jenson Button
March 6 - Lewis Hamilton

i wonder why the change this year? i.e JB, JB, LH, LH

maybe they think having 2 solid days each of testing will get the best out of the drivers in the car instead of alternating

The test in Bahrain was cancelled last year, so MacLaren only had two test sessions, that makes their comeback in Australia with a completely untested diffuser so impressive.

I would imagine the change is for very simple reasons, like one of the two had a commitment to do some advertising on one/two of the test days.

Enables them to get on with testing instead of changing the car over for each driver everyday (didn't understand why they did that last year).

Not normally a biggie, but last year when they had the problems with the exhaust and had to sort that out even an extra bit of work no matter how small isn't welcomed.

However, its probably due to other commitments

PS page 27 of the MP4-27 thread (sad I know) :-)

There was a second test at Barcelona to make up for the lack of Bahrain so there was just as much testing as scheduled, and on a better testing track.

Was still an untested EBD though.

If that is the case then its not an advantage that would last as rear wings are pretty easy to copy, id also be surprised if it were the case, the rules are quite strict and the wings looked pretty optimized last year.

Unless it relies on something less easily changed in the aero of the rest of the car.
