Not representative positions, but definitely have work to do. McLaren tend to be strong over Friday night in making changes for FP3, so we'll know where they stand then.

One car off, the other running experimental parts in one of the sessions. I don't think we can read a lot into today's times.
Favourite driver: Lando Norris
Favourite team: McLaren

Turned down the chance to meet Vettel at Silverstone in 2007. He was a test driver at the time and I didn't think it was worth queuing!! 🤦🏻‍♂️

Carlos's laptime was made with used soft tires and Lando's best time was made with mediums. Lando was also the first one to post that lap on the track so everyone else had some track evolution advantage over that time too. I would say if Lando had the clean lap he would have been slightly ahead of the Renaults and maybe Albon too.

Other than that, a lot of data gathering in general with Carlos so he didn't go for outright performance today. Anyway, let's wait for tomorrow.

A lot of work to do...

Carlos: "Today was a tricky Friday for us. The car is far from its sweet-spot and we’ve being trying different set ups to adjust the balance. Not quite there yet, so a lot of work ahead of us tonight. We’ll do our best to improve before Qualy."

Friday review sounds like the team is on the back foot a little bit but chasing their tails usually brings out the best in them. FP3 will make clear if Q3 in Quali will be easy or a struggle

Are we sure Carlos was on used sofas?
Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Judging by the Lap time it could well have been

Carlos had new Soft tires, it was clearly visible when leaving the boxes.

They said on the team stream that the lap was decent considering the used tires. I didn't have the chance to watch neither of the practice sessions today so I am not sure if it was indeed the case.

Tyres are under enormous stress throughout the lap both front and rear. Where Mclaren struggled today was the balance front to rear. It was quite windy and as we have seen already MCL35 is extremely sensitive to wind direction. The hotter temps being another thing the car does not like. If you add to it, this being a new track where they do not have base setup, they are struggling to hit the sweet spot. They were struggling to finding the right ride height too. There is performance in the car, they just need to find it overnight. We have seen Mclaren turning around poor Fridays in to competitive Saturdays. I hope they will turn it around this time too.

The track layout may not be conducive to overtaking but the tyre deg will create enough performance differential to create overtaking opportunities towards the end of the stints. Undercut will be very powerful if the team manages to find an empty piece of road for the driver to drop in to. Lando has been remarkably clean and error free for a rookie but today he made a small mistake which proved very costly in terms of running on high fuel. Tomorrow i hope they will have a clean and consistent FP3 to bring their A game for qualifying.

he was still in the pits when the session was red flagged though, so they were new.

Did Norris destroy any new/unique parts in his crash, by the way, or is he good to go with the best package again tomorrow?

It seems that he only damaged his front wing, which is not the one with the new nose, therefore it shouldn’t have an effect on the package he will be driving tomorrow.

This is my take on the new used tyre talk after watching FP2.
Carlos was in the pits when Lando red flagged the session.
He did a new tyre run then did a second run on the same set of tyres and set 2 personal best in sectors 1 and 2 and his overall laptime was within 2ths of his previous new tyre lap.
That is why the team was happy with the used run laptime.
Obviously it goes to show that his new tyre run wasn’t the best.....
Does any know what the laptime delta is between and new and old quali sim?

Lando looked better yesterday than Carlos and I think he’d have been up there with Renault on the timesheets- I think he said that as much himself?

Anyway today is Saturday and I’m hoping we can show the same improvement from Friday to Saturday as we have over the last few weekends but I’m hoping the lack of turning engine up doesn’t hold us back now... Carlos said last weekend that Renaults ‘party mode’ has ‘saved’ a few of Mclaren’s qualifying sessions this season
