You don't know why Kimi crashed, saying it was because he pushed too hard is entirely baseless speculation. We haven't even seen a video of the crash.

Three seconds at this stage is pretty much nothing, especially when it's quite clear the aero on the ferrari car isn't close to final and that the engine homologation is next week.
If you say that he was trying to go slow... and crashed, then I would beg to differ :D

Reason:

Kimi put the wheels on the kerb, put his foot down and didn't catch it.

Not a direct quote, but pretty much what the man said himself.

Looks like Kimi was in a hurry for his ice-cream!
Is that the new aero package?

guys, If you say that 3 s at this stage is not EVERYTHING, I agree with you.
but if you say that it is NOTHING then I will say that you don't really know this sports and its history...

F1 preseason testing is not only a matter of cold programs protocols etc etc. motoracing in its basic is a matter of huge adrenalin pumping and competition feelings and anyone who have ever raced at any level knows perfectly it.
I can assure you that if kimi sees rosberg putting a really good time (because 1 s down last season pole on soft, whatever different element you can find: temperature track condition etc is by nomeans a very good time) well is the same that showing a red flag to a bull...you can be sure that he will not accept to stay 3 seconds behind unless
1) he already knows that HE can go actually 2 seconds faster than rosberg: so he does not see him as a real competitor
2)Presently he cannot go enough fast to accept the competition
In any case I would not say that this means nothing

This fails to take account of the tyre change mid season which turned the order on its head

This just confirms what I have just written
RB was behind in the test and INFACT it was behind in the first races of the season...
so, if saying that preseason times count zero you mean that as the season progresses, you have the possibility to improve and eventually to overtake your competitors then you are true...but this is not what I call zero.
it is also rather obvious I would say.

RB also seriously sandbagged in 2010 and 11 in pre season. Were they behind in melbourne in those years? They weren't. They also weren't behind in 2013 on pace, just on tire conservation.

5-6s off the pace though is definitely not sandbagging.

While there is some merit to your argument, you're comparing apples with oranges. The scale of the new regulations and getting to grips with it, is not what red bull had to contend with during testing in 2013. Things are different this time.

Yes. Also back then they could actually, you know, run the car. Their problems were mainly tire degradation. They ended the 2013 preseason testing having run 11,8% less than the Mercedes.
On the 2 tests so far, they have run 76.4% less than Mercedes (4.3 times less!). Not the same situation. I am sure Red Bull themselves know they are in much bigger trouble than they were last year.

What about the smaller teams, do we still expect to see Caterham and Marussia at the back of the field. I really want to see these guys move up.
