Great job by Lawson to be within 2 tenths of Tsunoda in his qualifying with a complete weekend.

Well Lawson's stint in the car has gone very well so far. He has been on the pace - a tenth off tsunoda in qualifying this weekend and his race pace seemed alright. Obviously we have no tsunoda to compare it to unfortunately.

And he did well in the tricky situation of Zandvoort. Overall I'm sure Marko will be pleased.

But it also becomes clear ricciardo is going to be out for a while longer.

I feel for Danny as he only just got back into the car and F1, but it’s nice to see Liam taking over and performing when needed.

What it does do though is create a few headaches in the RB camp about where to go for 2024 driver lineup. I can’t see Danny getting the boot just yet, but these races for Liam are very helpful if he gets the chance to be in the simulator to help with setup etc.

If Liam keeps driving well, it will be difficult for RB to say no to him for 2024.

This injury is the worst timing for Daniel.

Monza GP

Liam Lawson (AT04-03, Car 40)
Race: Pos. 11th

“A couple of things went wrong today, we need to look into the start, as I could have done a better job, and that’s where we lost the chance. The pace wasn’t too bad then, but the race slightly got away from us. I’m still learning the procedures and definitely starting to feel more comfortable in the car, but I’m just a little bit disappointed with my race, as I think we may have had the pace for points today. I’m not sure though, so we need to look into it. These races are longer than I’m used to, so definitely adjusting, but I felt much more prepared than I did last weekend, so I’m happy about that.”

Yuki Tsunoda (AT04-04, Car 22)
Race: DNS

“I heard a weird sound from the car, and after that, I didn’t feel any power. We don’t know the exact reason yet, but we’ll investigate. Obviously, no reliability issue would’ve been nice, but it’s only the first time this year, so we stay positive and come back stronger. I wanted to race, especially starting so close to the points at our home race, so it’s a shame because our pace looked quite strong during practice, but there is a lot we can take from this weekend. The car performance has been looking consistently solid the last couple of weekends, and even if we struggled on some days, we were able to come back stronger the next day. To be able to extract the maximum is one of our strengths, so I’m not worried about the future.”

I like the reflective attitude of Liam where he takes responsibility, makes no excuses. Clearly a good learner and he's shown more already than most recent rookies. His position does look a little precarious with Daniel in the team. I don't know if three seasons has shown enough to confirm Yuki as belonging, what do others think?

Williams might be open to a Lawson loan next season if RB want to keep Yuki/ricciardo and Sargeant doesn't show any improvement.

I've never been excited by Yuki, I don't think it's a cultural thing just that he doesn't somehow seem that...... smart. I maintain that after year 3 the clock is ticking. Is this driver taking up space that could be used developing a young driver with more potential? As a Kiwi I'd love to see Lawson succeed and he has looked quite promising so far but it's really too early to tell. I get the feeling he is not overawed by F1 and certainly not by Yuki - he has already got the gap down to a couple of tenths and has plenty of ceiling on these performances. Daniel is another matter, if he gets his mojo back he is a very quick and aggressive driver who would provide Liam a greater challenge.

Reminds me of Lewis's move on Kimi many years ago. Beautifully executed by Lawson. =D>

Marko on Lawson:
“Liam has been with us for a while. He is a tough but very smart man in a fight, a bit like Bruce McLaren. This is certainly someone for the future

The speed was there [last weekend in Monza], and that is a good sign”

However, he is now still driving in the Japanese championship, and there he is second in a very, very difficult battle. The cars are faster there than in Formula 2 but because it is in Japan, it is not viewed that way here”

“Maybe he can win the title there. Will he get a [full-time] seat instead of [staying] a reserve driver? That could happen quickly”
