Never expected someone with so much success to obsess so much about credit, like it's a highschool beauty pageant. It's only natural and a positive thing to publicly credit and promote people under you to boost their morale, self confidence and enable them to eventualy get along on their own...

People should just imagine what it's like to be lower seniority engineer and contribute with an original idea that ends up being an obvious point of interest of all teams and public, only to have every article attribute this idea to the well established man on top, who had nothing to do with it.
That is not what happens Newey.
Newey is very hands and and involved.
He is not a skill-less people manager that takes credit like most would do.

That would be similar to Ross Brawn who is not a specialist of any real kind, though technically competent, but he was GIVEN a lot of credit for car designs despite him reminding people he doesn't design the cars.

Not disputing any of that. My disbelief is any notion that has him as a person who gives such importance to credit at this stage of his career. He's demonstrated to be invaluable to RBR so many times and everyone knows how important he is to all their success, people basically worship him around the world. And yet sending emails to TP and a personal friend, to right the wrongs on who gets the credit for what... I mean, it's a rumour, but everything we've read about his transfer lately proved to be right.

As for Brawn, can't comment on that as I've always known him as technical manager and not as a car engineer. 20+ years ago when our local commentator spoke of him, that I paid attention to, he explained how good he is at putting right engineers in the right place and ensuring everyone can do their job. Had no idea what it meant at that time though
And they call it a stall. A STALL!

I don’t know AN much, I’ve not read his book, mostly i know he’s the best at car design.

This story is giving a whole new dimension to the guy for me. The need for veto, for people to give him credit but indirectly leaving a team in shambles soon as you leave are not positives to me. He’s obviously great, good for AM to have gotten him, but if that comes with implosion of the team when he leaves… what happened to building succession plans?

Same for me tbh, I didn't expect many of the things that surfaced up and it definitely puts some historic stories into a new perspective

Why would AN have to be the one planning a succession plan for AN leaving? It is obviously on Red Bull to have a plan in place in case ANYONE leaves, anyone being Max, AN, Horner or well... anyone.

That’s not exactly what I’m saying but…

He was basically a founder of the team, you’d expect your C-level people to plan for succession as part of their duties, basically teach your folks to do your job and mentor them. If you are at the top of leadership what is RBR beyond that? How is CH supposed to teach how to build cars to engineers?

What I’m saying is that you expect an environment in which people learn from him over decades and end up being successors, but somehow that hasn’t happened?

All of this is very important and very true.

I don’t know Newey personally but based on what has leaked recently, my sense is that he carries an ego with him and a need for acknowledgement and recognition. He needs to be understood as the genius in the room; or, to put it another way, he needs to be understood as the reason behind his given team’s success.

No doubt Newey is phenomenally talented, intelligent, and experienced, but he seems to carry some baggage and undesirable traits related to his willingness to share ideas and work with/mentor others.

Well can you support that with the performance from Ferrari in the last 15 years? Newey seems to have been more successful. Keep in mind Bryne is still a consultant at Ferrari..

Engineers with the ego you describe are not like Newey. In my experience people with that sort of behaviour are not good listeners and are very rigid in their approach. I can put my neck out and say Newey is far away from being a diva.

So a full time TD/CTO is comparable to an occasional, non-executive, part time consultant based on the other side of the planet?

So much about the ego of Newey:

Don't think that Fallows already knew in 2023 that Newey will join the team...

In the last months there are a lot of guys around the paddock with their own agenda, who try to put the guy in a very good or bad light.

No matter how good or how wide a knowledge an engineer has they have to work with ( and usually for ) others, so interaction at a level where it is a two way street is essential. I have worked with those who just make a dictat and you get back to them when it is done, but something with continual development and even a shifting understanding of the rules interpretation has to be among an amicable group to be successful. There is still a BOSS>others ethos, but not command-comply which this would seem to suggest
When arguing with a fool, be sure the other person is not doing the same thing.

What are the odds of Newey coming to AMR as TP in the end? I don't see a better position available that fits his rumoured expectations. After 40 years in the sport, he's more than capable of organising an entire team
