Didn't seem like Schumi was on a hot lap then. Alonso gained on him quite rapidly during that complex. But if he was on a hot lap then nothing to worry about. There wouldn't be any penalty.

MS had his DRS opened at that time
and i guess he made a mistake and ran wide and alonso closed in
it didnt destroy Alonso's Q2 run, so i guess there wont be any penalty

Nico Rosberg: I ran our old exhaust system in qualifying today as part of our evaluation programme for next year. We had already used it yesterday and made the decision to continue for the rest of the weekend to help with the learning process. The car felt good this morning in the cool temperatures but the difference to Michael’s car surprised me this afternoon. So I hope that the race pace is better tomorrow and the switch will be worth it. I will definitely push to score points.

Ross Brawn: Today has been about getting the tyres into the right working zone, and the unusual number of laps that everyone ran in qualifying reflects that. With Michael, it worked very well today. He was able to get his tyres working exactly how he wanted, and it was a great effort from Michael and the team to post the sixth fastest time. The extra place gained from Grosjean’s penalty means we’re on the right side of the grid so an excellent job all round. Nico ran the standard exhaust this afternoon as part of our programme to ensure that we go into the winter fully understanding our exhaust system. Consequently he found it difficult to get the tyres working and that led to the result we got. Whilst it’s disappointing to qualify in 17th, and we know that Nico could have done far better in a different car, we will get the full picture of the changes made in the race tomorrow and then have all of the data that we wanted to collect.

Incredible how Rosberg fall down from P3 to Qualifiyng. He had the old exhaust in practice as well, so the difference is quite strange. But very good job from Michael, who put everything together at the right moment.

So it seems they are so blatantly using the next 2 races as testing sessions for 2013. We can see that in the exhausts and new DRS mechanism.

That makes sense given the limited testing time and strategically they are better to commit to next year. However, they are only 12 points ahead of Sauber in the WCC. They'll look silly if they let Sauber sneak ahead in the WCC over the next 2 races because Rosberg ran an old exhaust.

So its seems old was faster on long runs, but it struggled on one out lap plus one flying lap? So perhaps it didn't see like such a gamble after FP 1 and 2. However the quali run clearly caught then off guard.

I do worry when teams have significantly different parts on cars it shows that they aren't sure what is going on. After all if they new what was happening then they'd know which part was best.

.... or..... the new part has no perceivable difference on performance so it doesn't matter which part is used. That also shows they don't know what is going on because something expected to make a big difference is actually worth diddly squat.

Could it be due to driving styles? We saw the red bull try two different options as both drivers preferred a specific one. Maybe nico wants to see if they can tailor the car to him and his style?
