New qualifying format...

It's quite clear now that (with one occasional exception) the session ends at the end of the first 90 knockout period. With five cars supposedly being knocked out after, that effectively shortens the session by nine minutes. There's your problem.
The 'occasional exception' is if a car in the top three or four potential knockout victims needs to go again and they make the decision to do so straight after the first knockout.
Most of the teams did a much better job today and the result was an even worse qually than Aus.

I actually enjoyed qualifying today. The new format has its problems, but there is some merit to it as well. Kvyat is out of position, Perez as well. Button under-delivered on the lap he got, and Wehrlein instead showed that if you do a decent first lap you get the chance to do another one and improve. Overall I do still prefer last years qualifying system. Crofty and Brundle especially were way too grumpy today though.

Great laps today be Hamilton and Ricciardo.

In a Bernie interview he has said that because they would need a unanimous vote to change things this new qualifying will remain. He implied that he would not vote to go back to the old system.

Then surely they need to throw a vote of no confidence and get him removed from the decision process?

One could surmise that the next meeting of the executive will go something along these lines...

"To ensure the security and continued stability of Formula 1 the FoM will be reorganised into the first and only authority of Formula 1 for a safe and secure...personal bank account"



In my humble opinion, the Bahrain qualifying session was a tad worse than Australia (once more, my subjective opinion / observation)

I really don't get the hate for that format. If there would be still the old format we would wait for track action the first 10 minutes before they are running their hammerlaps. And now we get to see almost complete laps also from cars that we usually not very often.
For me this format is about as good or bad as the previous format.

I personally would just reverse the result of the last race and let them race for half an hour or so.

Isn't the whole point of qualifying to rank the grid from fastest to slowest? This system comprehensively fails at this while at the same point offering none of the merits of a 1 lap shootout style of qualifying.

Yes absolutely. It's meant to be about raw qualifying speed. It's not meant to be about tactics and strategy, that's meant to be the race.

I fully agree with this policy. Bear in mind that those who don't like something will complain vociferously in any format they can, while those who are happy or don't really care will remain relatively quiet.
