So, what makes a track suitable for tests?

There's plenty of that in Mugello.

I think possibly the straight is too long - I think possibly, you want a track where a mid-range setup provides the quickest laptime. Mugello's layout I think favors low-drag cars too much. For example if this was 2009 or 2010, Force India would do well here.

The fact that it's provided for free?
From the article it seems that most of the teams have reluctantly agreed, but as Gillan said, a common decision has been taken, so they better use the track.

McLaren simply doesn't like the in season test because they've invested heavily into their simulator & aren't as reliant on track data as some of the other teams. When a McLaren employee of Lowe's status mentions cost cutting as a reason why he doesn't want to test, it's a rubbish excuse and there's other reasons behind their opinion. Lowe: "It's a bit of a disruption and it's not necessary for us to go racing to have an in-season test. But it does gives teams an opportunity to take another step forward in development at a greater rate than before".

The bottom line is an in-season test somewhat negates the investment in and development advantage of having such a good simulation program as McLaren has. It will allow other teams to catch quicker than they would in previous years and he doesn't like it.

and perhaps might explain why Hamilton and Button won't be there...

Hopefully Macca aren't under estimating this test compared to others

Does sound as if they don't have a big upgrade package for the start of the European season, as you would usually expect. If they did, surely they wouldn't object to being able to test it, regardless of what everyone else is doing.

I don't think it's that they don't have any updates, 99% of the time teams have updates ready for Barcelona. It's that McLaren are very strong in the area of simulation; Wind Tunnel, CFD & Car simulator and until this year obviously have developed their car throughout the season with these 3 tools. Having an in-season test helps tremendously the teams that aren't as strong in these areas. Hence their apprehension. I wouldn't want to give up an advantage either.

hi guys,
i intend to be at mugello on 2nd or 3rd of May. It will be my 1st live contact with F1 so please give me some hints:
- what session (morning or afternoon) will have more cars on the track
- what day - test will have more cars on the track
- do i have to prebook or i will find enough tickets at the circuit in the tests-days?

Thank you for your time.

Mugello is a track with a flow simmilar to Jerez, however the straight compromises it as you need a good tracktion and aero ballance for S2 and S3 (Using the MotoGP 4 sectors) and S3 needs a plain ballanced car. S1 is where low drag is needed, and where there is most time to be gained.

In MotoGP teams try to have as high a 6th gear as they can get away with as they do 340Kmh down at Turn 1. However this compromises the rest of the gear selection and means traction is either reduced and limited in some way. The aero ballance can help with this, but then you sacrifice speed in order for the car to be draggy.

Mugello is too much of a compromise for F1 in all departments of the car. The most simmilar on the F1 callander would be somewhere like Sepang or Interlagos.

However it is a bloody great track. I am really looking forward to seeing a F1 car arround Mugello again.
