He hasn't "all of a sudden" got quicker. The evidence suggests it's been ongoing throughout the season, with the biggest improvement evidenced in Zandvoort.
Maybe even a few days in the sim with some good driver coaching and you gain a lot. In F3, a tenth or two is a lot and with the inexperience of the drivers, not impossible
Mick in a simulator, a good amount of professional coaching, finding flaws and how to deal with them, some F1 engineers looking at data and finding the best setup, definately will do miracles if the rest is 'just amateuring around'. that sounds a bit harsh, but let's keep it like that.
additionally, nobody knows whether there might have been a minor positive development for Michael. Mental state is the most important, and the state of his father's medical condition surely will cloud him, perhaps not a huge thundercloud, but even a tiny fog will have an impact. who knows something happened, OR he has had some psychological help to 'really' deal with it, and he's now wearing fog goggles or stepped past the fog and can be the talent he really is.
that is not saying that he is even remotely close to Michael - he probably is talented, but just how much is a totally different question. Ralf was talented too, just not as much as Michael. Bruno Senna also had definate talent, just not anything like the great legend Ayrton. Whether his talent is enough to be a force in F1 is another story alltogether. He's up to a huge mountain. Even if he'd be as talented, i wonder whether it's a climb he similarly wants to make or even able to.
He might 'just' be happy enough by having a win. Perhaps a WDC under his belt. But whether he wants to reach his father's figures?

while also sending off 4 Hamilton players to make it more interesting"
He is not the only one improving. Look at Robert Shwartzman, who was second in all three races in Nurburgring behing Schumacher. He was also 2nd, 3rd and 1st in Austria. The first part of the season was not too good comparatively.
IMO some guys just need time to pull things together.
But the thing that striked me most when I watched the races was that almost everybody is CRAZY consistent. Usually the racing in front is trading 10ths of a second.
My opinion is, that the drivers performance in F1 do not vary very much but the cars are much to complex and there is no consistent behavior. That's why we see such differences in performance. If you put them all in same cars you could see a new race winner in every race. But that is just a theory.

Indeed. When you reduce the number of factor that can make the difference, the best drivers still shine but the difference is much smaller.
Intersting. Especially since they use spec engines which are homologated. So it looks like everyones equal, except some drivers/teams are more equal than others.
Question is how one would get a better engine than others... cherrypicking parts? Using other oil specs? Maybe parts on the engine which you can somehow make minor changes to without causing homologation problems?
A simple arrangement to have data analyzed by a F1 team with chassis setup recommendations would have massive impact.
Probably not hard to get with his money/ name, ...and brilliant if it's helping. Im sure all teams could farm this kind of work out to lower classes, and they should. Best way for them to get all the driver data to drive their junior programs.
We'll see what the effect of this is, but something has gone on.
Indeed, It also reminds me of when I read a few years back about Stroll going to Mercedes to get a little 'extra' to help him win his F3 title in 2016. Maybe something has been going on this year, who knows.
