That's a valid point, although the ban should have been for that safety reason, not vision.
Funny thing, the new sidepod devices on the side or in front of the sidepod posess similar safety risks. As well, they have grown so large that they actually may impair vision to the side. The Honda ones are very large and high. As well, during the race I noticed that on Button's car they vibrated noticeably.

The real reason to ban the vertical fins should be aesthetic. I agree with Dave on that: the cars are FULL of things that seem fragile, very sharp and dangerous if broken (not counting the ego of some pilots :) ).
