Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

So this is from the F1 website's technical analysis section, so perhaps it is accurate.

I don't get the benefit of the layout, especially with the MGUK at the front of the ICE. It almost looks like its axis is vertical. That would make the top cooler likely an air to air intercooler. Odd if this is the case.

Maybe this is an actual representation of the PU and that the compressor and MGUH are within the V.

It still doesn't seem like the best solution.

Mod edit - This post is a response to six-o-six post below, a quirk due to merging two threads.

That makes more sense. The picture of the actual car looks like the compressor is front mounted based on the intake in the roll hoop.

Could it be that Honda is just messing with the rest of the field engineers by disguising its PU so that sometimes the compressor seems to be at the front, sometimes the MGUH is sandwiched between the turbine and the compressor and sometimes the compressor is next to the turbine?

I've posted this picture in another topic; don't know if it's credible:

I've doubts about the actual MGU-H positioning.

@f1writers from I've seen and asked Honda, the layout is closer to mercedes

I'm guessing that by having the MGU-H sitting in between the Compressor and Turbo means that they can use the MGU-H more efficiently (collecting energy quicker and reduced turbo lag perhaps) and cooling might be easier to achieve even with tight packaging. Placing the MGU-K at the front of the ICE is probably part of the cooling solution for the overall power unit package. Might explain why Honda have had so much trouble with seals in testing and glitches with sensors.

Funny how people still ask about this when we have photos showing the intake going to the front of the engine.

The compressor is on the front of the ICE with the MGU-H in the V between the the heads.

It looks pretty clear compressor at the front, MGU-H in ththe V and the turbine at the rear. However there is still a question about how they are connected.

That's what I initially thought, too. It makes sense and what I expect. It also fits best from the picture posted above. I was just confused since they published that on the official F1 site. You'd think it'd be 'official'.
