A shameless image thread for the enginephiles

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

The Judd GV5.5 S2; 5.5 72 degree V10 at 135 kg for LMP1, 650+ Hp when restricted to 7000 Rpm, but could go to 10 000 Rpm.

Oh wow, I remember seeing and hearing the older version of that engine in 2000 at the only ALMS race we had in Aus held on the full Adelaide F1 circuit on New Year's Eve!

It sounded amazing and was really distinctive. Iirc it was a Lola chassis

Edit: I think it might have been powering this Rafanelli Car: (my memory is foggy but this is a Pic I took that weekend)

EDIT 2: OMG my memory was correct - found this On-Board footage on Youtube:

I doubt it very much, here is a better image of the Judd GV5.5 S2, where you can see things more from above;

This is not just any photo of 2 Landcaster Bombers, These 2 are the only airworthy examples left.
This picture was taken 1 hour ago, and the Landcaster in the backgound just flew from Hamilton Ontario Canada to RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire England, 4 day trip and some guy from England paid $80000 CDN to take the flight over from Canada
It will be there for some airshows over the next few weeks you can see the dates for its flights at http://www.warplane.com/
and some background on the 2 bombers here http://www.theregister.co.uk/2014/08/08 ... ngsby/[img]
I'm looking forward to seeing video clips of these 2 planes flying together, the sound of 8 Merlin engines passing over head, would be music to my ears.

Judd's history in Formula 1 is mighty interesting, he started out in 1989 with a 3.5 V8, the EV, here in the Williams;

Image

Then in 1991 came the GV, a 3.5 V10, used by Scuderia Italia, Brabham and briefly by Andrea Moda;

Image

For 1993, he teamed up with Yamaha, which supplied the 5-valve heads, the 3.5 OX10 engine was a gem in the Tyrrell;

Image

The 1995-97 OX11 3.0 looked the part, the C-version superlight at 105 kg, but was down on power in Damon Hill's Arrows;

The 1989 3.5 OX88, 40 valve V8 was an all Yamaha effort, used by Zakspeed that year;

Image

So was the 1991-92 3.5 OX99, 60 valve V12, powering Brabham and Jordan in respective years;

Image

But Yamaha was in reality only a proxy tor Toyota, who would join Formula 1 later on.

X, I did a little investigation into that beast (sadly it never actually raced due to teething problems):

Aluminum block - steel liners
Aluminum heads - stainless steel valve seats
Race HP = 659 @ 6250 RPM
Race Torque = 554 @ 6000 RPM
Qualifying HP = 700+ @ 6500 RPM - Torque in excess of 600
Forged four-bolt main caps
Forged Toronado 455 crank
Forged-Tru 8.50:1 forged pistons
Carrillo forged billet rods
Crower 320 degree cam with 0.555" lift
Dual TRW 375 E-10 Turbos
Race Boost = 10.5 psi
Qualifying boost = whatever it takes
Lucas Fuel Injection
Olds-specific cast intake aluminum manifold

Note the intake manifold shaped to produce downforce!

Late in 1973, privateer "The Commander Motor Homes Team" developed their own 8.1 liter turbo engine in a McLaren M20;

Image

The car was driven by Mario Andretti, here ay Laguna Seca 1973;

Image

And at Riverside the same year with a "Porsche" nose-job;

Notice the guy in black on the left, yes some of us looked like that back in the days.
