Mercedes AMG has announced it has signed two engineers from Red Bull Racing to strengthen the technical department following the departure of Ross Brawn as team principal.
This forum contains threads to discuss teams themselves. Anything not technical about the cars, including restructuring, performances etc belongs here.
Fox, I know Rome wasn't built in a day but can you honestly look at that team and tell me that they have been improving relative to competition? That the W03 for example was better positioned to beat their rivals compared to W01? I'll give you though that the attention to detail took a step forward from W02 to W03.
You are right though, they have ditched the silver bullets and that's good, even more experienced teams get it wrong. But arriving in Melbourne to find the Mercedes pair qualifying in places 9 and 10 would be a disaster if you ask me. It would show that yet again they didn't manage to close the gap up to a point that it would translate in a position gain.
And if we see that indeed the rhythm of this team is slower than it's competitors, and their cars almost always are bellow what it's expected from them, how can we be optimistic for 2014? Thing is that even if we (the fans) "forgive" them for sub-par years in 2013 and 2014 (hypothetically), the board would not, and with Lauda in the team this is going to blow up. If their 2014 bid fails, and they don't even mount a serious challenge, I can't see them staying for 2015.
Even if by a miracle they do though, I think it's their last chance to approach a top-level driver if they fail in the 2 coming seasons. They will be considered a midfield team and even if they manage to build a championship challenge say in 2016, it will be seen as one-off and noone will be willing to transfer to Mercedes to seek glory. If that's not a marketing disaster, what is?
It would have been so much easier if they bought Sauber instead of Brawn GP.
Again I am not hater, but I am someone who "suffered" for 3 years looking at a Mercedes team that had nothing that was "Mercedes" about it. And don't even get me started on wasting the last 3 years of MSC's career.

It's hard to disagree with the point that Merc have been a massive disappointment but the signing of Hamilton and the technical chiefs says to me they're finally getting serious.
There will not be any excuses come 2014 season there is nowhere to hide because the restructuring has taken place and if we're to believe Brawn there should be some tangible evidence this year. I don't think they'll be around in 2015 either if 2014 is a washout. You're right it will be a marketing disaster to continue to follow round a soft drinks company when F1 is the closest and most relevant to road car technology in years.
I don't know how much of this year's car is relevant to next year and whether the engine and associated energy recycling technology will out weight aero genius? So if this year is a write-off does it matter because next year it is effectively a completely different formula. The only similarities appear to be that the cars have one driver and four tyres still.
It's early days in the season 140 laps today as of 1525 which is >2x other teams so there's some positives.

Also, my opinion is that it's better to have the problems during tests, rather than during the season.
However, I believe that the issues the W04 has had so far were unacceptable. In another day and age, either of those accidents (fire, brake failure) could have killed the drivers.
True, the brake failure is very relevant and depending on where you have the failure it can be very risky.
At least, yesterday and today seem to be much better days.
To be quite fair - Hamilton has called his 2007 - 2012 McLarens "the best car I've ever driven." - he plays the corporatespeak game a lot in preseason testing.
The way to interpret PR and politicians is to consider if the opposite was a realistic alternative. If not then the statement doesn't actually tell us anything.
A politician saying "I believe learning to read is important" is pure BS, because no one is going to say the opposite are they?
The routine reports during F1 testing that the car feels great can be read the same way. Merc are not going to say "the car is rubbish" are they? Hence the supposedly affirmative statement is actually telling us nothing.
