Honda Power Unit Hardware & Software

All that has to do with the power train, gearbox, clutch, fuels and lubricants, etc. Generally the mechanical side of Formula One.

They are saying that the engine is working 100% reliable mechanically and that the root of the problems is the PU mappings which are up to now, are not dialed in.
source?

When it breaks down tomorrow I guess we'll know the answer then.

Are you muramassa?

I got that one from television. Engine systems are detuned to about half. I don't hink that means 50% power though. It could mean half KERS and half MGUH or Half Boost... i really don't know...

Localised heating of parts is the culprit. This type of heating is not bulk overheating. Its not a radiator problem... but imagine a heat affected part that is exposed closed to a heat generating source.

They also do not want to upgrade the parts yet before understanding the problems and more of the limits.

I am hoping that during the race we can see on board graphics of revs , gears and top speed of Mclaren so we can compare it with Merc engine teams!

Nothing so far suggests that the car is "quick".

I get that the team / drivers will say they have a good base and the chassis is promising, but what did you expect? "car is a dog and we'd rather be home" ?

Tight packaging means very little by itself - I remember back in 04/05 Sauber was running smaller sidepods than Ferrari and they weren't exacly beating them.

The engine actually didn't sound as bad as I expected today, but they were way down on power and there were some odd noises here and there. Catching up with the likes of Toro Rosso and Lotus will be a big challenge, let alone the front runners...

I am surprised Mclaren didnt do more rolling road tests post testing like Torro Rosso did.

Has that loophole been closed?

I have an big question... How do you explain this strange Honda Power Unit noise

It looks like a lawnmower !

It looks like it belches !

It does not look like an engine noise anyway !!!

It sounded bad, but compared to the first test...

It's almost as though you were watching a different qualifying session to the rest of us.

Instead of being 5 seconds adrift they'll be 2.5 seconds adrift, is that how it works? Oh, then there's 6 tenths for Alonso which takes it to 1.9 seconds adrift.

These plucking of figures out of thin air and clutching at straws are probably not in the right thread.

whhenever Alonso drove really problematic cars ('12,'14) that gap(to teammate) was more like 1.5.......ish

Thats actually quite funny. To be honest i dont expect to see Alonso any time soon. That cars performance in qualyfying must be playing havoc with his concussion.
On a serious note if the Mannor F1 team had been running there is the very real possibility they may have beaten Mclaren. They were doing 1:34s in a dampis qualyfying session last year. Its as bad as it gets. Its safe to say the car isnt running at 50% power output or I doubt it would be hitting 300 clicks on the mainstraight.
Alonso can't magically get 2 second out of a car thats fundamentally flawed and ridiculous. When the car is this handicapped you could put Max Chilton in and be hard pused to notice any major performance difference.
