Mercedes AMG F1 W04

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Remember, if it's not on the car it shouldn't be in this thread - things you can see on a photograph.

Lap times are not a physical feature, I've moved them to the testing thread.

@_maxxo_ At the first test teams tend not to coat the bodywork with heat reflective coatings, only adding them where needed to save weight.

I wonder what the silver reverse ramps on top of the driveshaft cowling are for. Maybe sensors looking at the exhaust (in the same way they look at the tyres with IR sensors) or maybe scooping some air in to the cowling to keep something cool. Perhaps it's part of the signalling system for the passive DRD thingy.
That's the bottom of the engine cover you're seeing there. It extends right to the rear of the car like a tunnel.

Hi-res of the rear of the car, looks like the dipping floor could be feeding the centre of the diffuser?

Interesting shapes down there.

Have another look. It is the scorch marks on the FLOOR. There are no exhausts there.

Why don't they run with air flow sensors like other top teams do?

They did for the first time last year when they switched from the 50 to 60% models...I think they have confidence in their CFD/tunnel models...although I would like to see more sensors in the rear they do run different sensor packages in the front (Scarbs pointed some out on the FW, there are some over the nose etc).

I think they focused more on reliability because of those two days that they lost. Mab they would do some aero test if not for that.
It's been a long time since we drove last time, but it has also been a short time at the same time
