"The car stopped," is Sainz's insightful summary, as he makes the short walk back to the McLaren garage. "I was just doing a practice start. Up until now it's been a smooth day, we haven't had any complications until now."

Recovered well after that stoppage, pumping in some decent mileage now. It appears the stop was a minor issue.

Q: (Stefano Mancini – La Stampa) Kimi, will you help Vettel to win his championship this year?
Kimi Raikkonen: I can only drive one car, obviously.

Almost 120 laps with only one very minor hiccup and a fastest lap time comparable/faster than most of the midfield rivals. For reference, Alonso posted a Q3 time of 1:17.721 in Barcelona last year so Sainz lap today was only around half a second slower on the first day of testing (when some teams are talking about around a 1.5s delta year on year. Very positive day all in all.

In fact it could well have been the most upbeat day of testing since leaving Mercedes?

Really solid day for McLaren today.

Waiting for info on tyre deltas to understand their lap times a bit more but mileage was excellent considering the one stoppage.

Much better start than the past few seasons but performance wise we will only really begin to understand later in week 2.

Not looking at the times, happy about the mileage, even though they lost a little under an hour, they recovered quite well....

Wouldn't worry too much about tyres for delta's either, they spent a lot of the long runs doing the odd slow pass past the pits for aero checks. See how the next few days pan out, they are 3 seconds faster than last years Day 1 testing, but then most teams are at least two seconds faster.

I think it's the first time in quite a few years they've clocked 100+ laps on opening day of pre-season tests.

More than 1000 km, for a new Renault engine, a good test.

If Alonso were in the car today he would probably be 6/10 faster then Carlos 😉

It is, since they introduced limited testing.

First week is more about aero correlation really than chasing lap-times.
