This is F1 where every tenth counts and in midfield every tenth is gold dust. I am sad to say we have failed to see where the car truly stands on Saturdays off late. Sainz has been decent but Lando has been miserable on Saturdays and next season he will be exposed massively if he does not raise his game. Mclaren are aiming t to return to the sharp end of the grid and they cannot afford a driver who leaves a couple of tenths on the table on Saturdays.
A few things I disagree with you... RIC hasn’t deliver on Saturday’s “week in week out” unless your only point of reference is RIC beating OCO... If that’s the unit of measure, I would say yes, but Estaban is having a very bad season so far, not only in terms of personal performance, but the car has failed him a lot too and that hurts anyone’s confidence.
I will agree that we haven’t watch the MCL35’s optimal pace in Qualy, but it has been more because of track conditions (Germany, Turkey) than because of the drivers.
Now, to say that Lando’s Saturday performance is “miserable” is unwarranted, not only he is on a very tight battle with Sainz in regards to their Qualy battle, the fact that he comes out and says that he left a tenth on the track doesn’t make it miserable... I actually believe that both Carlos and Lando are doing a fantastic job on Saturday’s
The MCL35 is NOT the third fastest car, I don’t understand why there is an expectation that they should be P5 - P6 in qualifying when the car doesn’t deserve that spot... Thinking about it, the fact that there is an expectation that the team will be at the front of the midfield battle on Saturday’s says a lot of how well both drivers are performing on Saturdays.
