Mercedes AMG F1 W04

Btw, that's a new floor with a new non-curved vane for the rear tire instead of the r shaped one they had ealier

I wonder what the silver reverse ramps on top of the driveshaft cowling are for. Maybe sensors looking at the exhaust (in the same way they look at the tyres with IR sensors) or maybe scooping some air in to the cowling to keep something cool. Perhaps it's part of the signalling system for the passive DRD thingy.
That's the bottom of the engine cover you're seeing there. It extends right to the rear of the car like a tunnel.
No it's not. Look more closely. There are other images that show definite ramp-shapeditems on the top of the drive shaft shroud. They are positioned about mid-length of the shroud and are approx 50mm in length (measured along the axle line). Lots of silver tape on the shroud to the rear 0f the ramp features.

You can see them very clearly here:

All that stuff on top of the driveshaft cover has to go for the races because they illegal so its probably only sensors.

What I'm more interested in that a bunch of tape and sensor on the drive shaft shroud is these:
Image

I see two possibilities:
1) Merc have once again found a loop hole that allows them to open up a hole into the diffuser, and this is what the unexplained trough on the rear of the floor is.
2) Even if they haven't done that, that's a pretty radical new diffuser design.

Edited to cut down image bandwidth use.

I think it's just light reflected on transition to the reference panel

It's been a long time since we drove last time, but it has also been a short time at the same time

Isnt that the dip in the floor we have seen on the top side but now from the back of the diffuser ? Don't think its holes but at least its not a flair floor which must mean they got a loophole.

And this pic is the clearest view we got of that the inside wall, the carbon fibre bit on the sidepod next to the floor dips down here at the back under the bigger bodywork coming out.

Follow the carbon fiber at the bottom of the sidepod

Save it and zoom if you wanna see better but if you see the sun beam that looks like a knife, just before that you see the carbon fibre edge going down. You can also see and edge in the floor at this point.

Either my eyes are tricking me, or the edge you are speaking about is above the floor?

The carbon fiber dips down and under the bulky area at the back. That's what I'm seeing, cause you clearly see the carbon fiber is rounded where it dips down but its hard for me in paint to paint that area to show properly. And I see that its rounded there and goes down cause its straight up until this point

Huntresa is right! They are doing this to clear up flow to the SMH (Starter Motor Hole)...it is similar to what ferrari were doing on the F2012...but they have taken it a step further with the F138...

This is done to help prevent stalling of the diffuser by allowing clearer flow through the SMH

The notches on top of the driveshaft cover almost look like an intake. I bet they're simply measuring airflow and the stems underneath the shaft cover are wind vanes
