Echoes of last year when they completed an obscene number of laps during testing - thankfully Ferrari seem to be very close behind them this time around, whereas previously Merc were out in front with nobody touching them.

Glad to hear the MCL32 has been started up. Hoping for some actual testing...
Perhaps I am wrong, but wasn´t Ferrari quite close too?
In terms of pace, yes. But Mercedes completed 1294 laps during the testing stages - 3743 miles! Next down the list was Toro Rosso on 1049 laps. Ferrari were somewhere below that.

Bottas’s latest stint on the soft tyres, 21 laps in total in the second block of this race simulation. It concluded with a slower pitstop, but he’s back out there now.

1m58.755s OUT; 1m23.582s PB; 1m24.760s; 1m25.217s; 1m25.309s; 1m25.641s; 1m26.182s; 1m25.867s; 1m25.993s; 1m26.938s; 1m26.395s; 1m26.064s; 1m25.762s; 1m26.678s; 1m26.748s; 1m26.510s; 1m26.774s; 1m26.859s; 1m27.139s; 1m27.248s; 1m49.171 IN.

This is his penultimate stint. How do this compares with last year racing sims?
I still see a lot of degradation in laptimes, maybe what has improved is thermal degradation(destroying the tires) when pushing the tyres hard.
Are you sure that's right? They look like last years times.
Got it straight from the live stream. I expected something closer to 1:24s as well.

That's what Autosport wrote alright, i'm hoping they know how what their doing.

And yes, seems slow honestly.

Seems as though the tires aren't up to the task. Driving to a lap time to conserve rather than pushing throughout the stint. Perhaps fuel consumption is an issue now as well with the higher drag/more time on full throttle.

Just realised I haven't seen any of that fluorescent paint for testing aero yet this year. I wonder if they still use it?

It's quite plausible teams would have extra ballast or a detuned engine or any other measurable variable to slow the car down at this point and hide their hand

Ferrari used it, RB, Mercedes, SFI, everyone did.

No way we can compare to bottas, maybe lower fuel loads, maybe bottas wasn't pushing hard. But at least we know these cars can go much faster than 27s in a race stint.

Race sim explain a lot. Thanks
Just to highlight, Last year in winter testing, on day two, Rosberg was lapping in 1m27.xxx while he was doing race sim, using medium tires. On Race day though, RB12 was doing 1m30.xxx when the race started (of course, after the coming together of Nico and Lewis).
It depends entirely on what stage of race sim he was doing those times. The fastest lap in that race was a 1:26.xxx and that was without the Merc's running in the race. If you compare final stint averages to first stint averages you'll get a 2-3 second difference.

Either way as those Verstappen times, Hamilton earlier today did a 19 lap stint starting at 1:21.7ish and moving into the 23's only after 14 laps. Judging by Bottas's times, Hamilton was likely doing final stint, as is Verstappen, Bottas obviously doing a full race stint.

We're going to see 1:25-26 seconds at the start of the race and 1:22's by the end of it most likely, which IF we keep the 4-5 second gap between qualifying and race.... means the current 1:20.xxx times aren't at all close to real qualifying pace. We'll be looking at 1:18-1:19's come Q3.
