Well, at the moment it seems like we are not going to have any race on Sunday...

Here's the latest GFS model for the projection of the typhoon. The pause at the end of the loop is the race start time. Green dot is suzuka. Wind speeds at suzuka at race start time are currently projected to be at 35-40mph. Could all easily change yet though. New models are available every 6 hours... will try to keep the thread updated

Updated forecast posted on page 7.

So dry race is out of the running in any case now? Unless they start the race 1st thing in the morning?

Aye, rain is very likely whatever happens with the typhoon's track now.

Could they both qualify and race on Saturday ? Quali in the morning, race in the afternoon. I've seen stranger things...

Possible, we have had quali and race on a sunday. Interesting to see what the FIA will decide when it's a serious threat.

The centre of it won't be over the track until Monday but the front edge will bring 40 mph winds and rain that these cars won't cope with.

The 18z GFS model tracks phanfone to be slightly more SW of Suzuka at race time, compared to the 12z model. Winds would also be calmer at ~25mph. It's worth keeping an eye on it but it'll likely be hard to say for certain exactly what it'll be like at race time before friday evening.

Green dot is Suzuka. The pause at the end is race time.
