both in Monza and Singapore only the tyre pressure of the top 4 starters were checked before the start, and I guess that's about what's possible in that short time frame of 1 or 2 minutes. So yes, taking the gamble would definitely make sense for most teams, especially as there's no penalty anyway.

1:30.9 for 2013 actually.

And the pole lap would have probably been even faster in 2013 if Vettel didn't have KERS problems.

I was interested to see 2011 was faster pole than 2010, even though no dd. maybe softer Pirelli rubber was a factor

Qualy was held on sunday in 2010 on a completely green track (and still drying out in some places) due to a monsoon on saturday. Pretty sure RB6 would easily go below 1:30 in optimal conditions.

For me the big question is: Can Rosberg beat Hamilton?

He just hasn't looked quick enough this year, and I'm still waiting to be proven wrong.

Unluckily for Rosberg AND for people wanting a closer championship, when Hamilton has a bad race or retires, so does Rosberg.

Only in qualy and that didn't last long. He also beat Hamilton in most qualifyings last year, but that didn't last long either.
Not for nothing, Rosberg's Championship is the only thing that lends credibility to Hamilton's recent success. Otherwise, he'd just be the guy who's had the best car. — bhall II

I don't think anyone has posted the drivers press conference yet?

Interesting!
in the fast sweeping Corners the 2014 car was ~15km/h slower than 2013, on the Long straights ~15km/h faster. That's a 15% higher lateral acceleration at 200km/h. Assuming comparable tyres this would be about 15% more Downforce than the 2014 cars. Will be interesting to see this year's values. The sweeping turns in Suszuka are ideal for such a comparison since especially in the middle sweepers there is no benefit of taking a different line for better acceleration out of the turn vs better carrying through of speed. Therefore different traction behaviour does not spoil the comparison.
Remember that the minimum weight increased from 642kg to 691kg between 2013 and 2014. That's half of the 15% right there.
Rivals, not enemies. (Paraphrased from A. Newey)

Shame the Renault is only good for blowing up itself these days.

Right. That plus Drs, as sectorone said, probably explains it :)

2011 still had EBD's and if I recall correctly, combined with DRS made the 2011 cars faster on some circuits than 2010 cars. For example Vettel went faster in 2011 Australia than in 2010.
