I think active aero was a long time coming (ok this is a baby step to it) as there is virtually no downside to it. Lot's of people will bitch it's not road relevent
There are plenty of road-cars that have active aero... Porsche Boxster/911, Audi TT, McLaren F1, all modern Ferrari's, even the original VW corado to name but a few.... Not only that but in a few cases (like the Mk2 Audi TT) they were added to INCREASE safety -i.e. the spoiler lifts at high speeds to reduce oversteer... so all this talk about active aero being dangerous is (in my opinion) rubbish. Have we had any complaints in the past year and a half about failed front wing adjustment mechanisms....??? I don't remember a single one....

If the FIA were serious about energy-consumption, we would have full bbodies as well as active aerodynamics around the clock.

Have a feeling that even WB would support this?

Moveable aero in general within a much reduced downforce level is fine.
This latest moveable rear wing is contrived however and is simply a patching over of the cracks caused by the inability to overtake, which is a direct result of to much downforce to start with.
Because of this there will be little improvement and an increased level of danger with the still excesively high cornering speeds.

I don't think that F1 should move away from open wheel racing. If it appears necessary for safety the rear wing could have a bumper function and the side pods could be extended between wheels to prevent wheels to interlock. But that is the maximum I would do. It is an open wheel formula and not a prototype like LMP. They need to optimize fuel efficiency within the contraints of the basic design principle.

I have already said that most restrictions can go off as soon as they limit the fuel load radically. That is the way to go and bringing the minimum weight down again.
