How can anyone say anything positive about the Pirelli tyres?

Hamilton's right rear looks a lot more worn than both the bulls.

hey guys, what would have spoken against using the mediums in Q3 ? getting them up to temperature?
considering the track was still damp, i doubt the full advantage of the supersofts (of ~1sec over the mediums) came into play.

looking at that photo, people will probably start pitting by lap 2-3 or 4, whilst already being slow because of the high degradation. wouldn't the medium tires have been an option to get a longer, more consistent 1st stint - with a late, fast and light supersoft stint?

edit: or - answering my own question - given that tire life is actually still unknown, it makes sense to qualify faster, ditch the supersofts quickly and then go on with the mediums for as long as needed.

The bad news is the car seems like a second off the pace, although it isn't too conclusive and i think the car is less than a second off the pace and that it's fast enough to be a threat in the race

It's the opposite. Because the track was damp - you wouldn't get temperature into the mediums.

Starting on the prime is overrated. What people need to realise is that even if Driver A runs the longer first stint, his rival Driver B will be on a set of that tyre that is "x laps" younger than DRiver A's. Whatever advantage is gained by the longer first stint, is nullified by the undercut.

The rear on the Force India and Merc look too ugly . Ferrari and RB look to have the same amount of graining though . I would be surprised if one in the top ten does more than 12 -13 laps on those supersofts . If they can manage 10+ laps then it can be a 2 stop race in dry conditions .

Can't sleep, I'm a total F1 junkie lol.

By the way, I'm surprised that some people are surprised Red Bull is dominating. I wrote this ~4 months ago.

Best outcome for many teams will be a safety car in the first lap, pit and get the super soft out of the way. this should cancel out whatever advantage lotus and RBR have with their tires.

Alonso made his lap in Q3 without DRS. Technical problem? Did Alonso forget push the bottom? I don't know

So again, after all the excitement, hopes, and anticipation, we start the season a full second slower than Red Bull. SIGH.
