Mercedes-AMG F1 W10 EQ Power+

If that video was pre-launch, then the updates for week two could possibly have been part of the plan along.

Mercs entire test was sort of puzzling, particularly running the front suspension at two different heights in week one (one producing slight rake and one keeping the car parallel to the track).
The effect of running the car parallel to the track would reduce drag by decreasing both the angle of attack of the rear wing and the downforce from the front wing - quite useful for straights. It would mimic Ferrari's squat on the straights. One the other hand, running the wing closer to the ground would be good for corners.

Perhaps their Melbourne car will spring another surprise by turning up with a suspension that incorporates both configurations - something they never tested (at least not as a single unit).

Well, this implied that they've rushed the Melbourne Spec.
I saw nothing in the video that implies anything close to that.

If that is indeed true, it bodes extremely well for them that they can produce things in a hurry run them on track, while most teams struggle with such long lead time in production. That should make them even more competitive than they have been!
That set of clothes was already under development for months though, it just wasn't ready for the shakedown/first week of testing.

There's no reason to take any pre-season or in-season interview with F1 personnel at face value.

Nope, this is a generalized PR piece.

In no way they couldve rushed to bring the update for the european races to pretesting. Melbourne maybe, as this is just a few weeks away.

Still i‘d assume that they decided to take the additional week for windtunnel and cfd and only bring the testing spec on the second week of testing.

Merc is usually spot on and not such a joke like williams ;)

A lot more details around the car's performance parameters.

IS THE MERCEDES W10 ANOTHER ‘DIVA’?
Mercedes seem to not enjoy the new Pirelli compounds with very heavy graining, even at times of the day when the so-called “cold graining” shouldn’t be a problem. Mercedes admit that they “also experienced it in the warm afternoon hours.” claim AMuS.

Other teams also have problems with the fact that the Pirelli surface peels off, but mostly limited to the cool morning hours, the so-called ‘cold graining’ phenomena. But graining can also be a consequence of too much slipping on the asphalt, pointing toward poor aero, but Mercedes technicians rule this out: “We certainly don’t have too little downforce.

On the second hardest C2 compound, the Mercedes looks best compared to the competition, hence why the team have almost exclusively run on this compound. The time of day also plays a role as to when the silver arrow is in good shape and when it is not.

“For a fast lap, 10 o’clock is our best time. For longruns from 12 to 14 o’clock. Unfortunately one hour of it is lunch break.” admit the pit wall to AMuS.

“The tyres behave very differently than last year,” complain many of the team engineers. And that makes it so difficult to read the lap times. Also, long-runs are tricky to read.

Lewis Hamilton did this at his Wednesday Longrun with the C3 tyres. Four to five laps constantly in the 1.20s, then the lap times increased rapidly to a level of 1.23 minutes, where they stabilized again.

This certainly harks back to 2017 when the W08 was at its peak, it was extremely fast – maybe even the fastest. But then it fell off that peak very sharply, due mainly to the way it worked the Pirelli. It didn’t warm its tyres evenly front-to-rear, therefore was difficult to find a sweet spot of set up for the car, especially one that works for more than one compound of tyre.

Could history be repeating itself in 2019?
If that is believable, then Hamilton did his best flying run on 4th day, on late afternoon and Bottas did his race stint the previous day in the afternoon time too.

Maybe it's a "I know what you did last summer" message to Ferrari.

I did. Even did a double-take to see wtf that sound was.

So, as some have said even without further tweaks to the set-up or new components Mercedes has time in hand.

This is the interesting part form the article. When we get to more realistic track and ambient conditions, Merc might find themselves sitting in the sweet spot with regards to the tires.

Mario Isola
“The thinner gauge protects you from blistering and overheating, it could generate graining especially in the colder conditions like in the early morning and late afternoon,” Isola admitted.

I said this elsewhere, but the important factor is, the Spec 2 car was barely 2 days old, before Bottas took it for a race sim. They had lost half a day before that due to oil pressure issue. Whereas, all other cars had completed 4 days of testing in the first test, then there was 5 days in between to go over the data to optimize the cars and then the next few days in the second test.

Whatever the reason be for Mercedes' late debut of Spec 2 car, they were bound to be on the back foot in understanding that car due to late arrival. With less than ambient track temperatures and lack of understanding of the car's performance window would have played it's part. Usually, Mercedes aren't quick off the box as they take time to understand the setup frailties of their car.

Whatever the true picture is, it should start becoming evident from Melbourne and they have the data from 4 days of running of the Spec 2 and 2 weeks of time before they turn the wheel in Melbourne.

Honestly, If I was them I'd have Lewis, Valtteri, Stoffel, and both Esebans rotating through the simulator 24/7 till they have to leave for AUS.

If it's only tyres that are Achilles heal, then they should be good as it's not an unknown territory for them.
