Renault R30

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

I could actually quote myself at the time of the launch of this car saying "most disappointing car of 2010" but this thing is fascinating, the ammount of tiny updates that Renault/Genii are throwing at it makes it one of the most interesting cars so far.

Cheers for the great imagery and commentary guys.

I asked Scarbs about his view on the R30's diffuser, here's his answer:
Link to the comments section on Scarbs' blog

When I first saw the car in Valencia, the cokebottle vented through the same open hole as the diffuser. Then the barhain update made me think there was a double exit for the upper diffuser, these pictures now confirm it. I have seen the other pics you published, as well as some from another ’source’ (which sadly I can’t republish). The inlet beneath the car and the aerofoil blades running in the middle of this openign are visible through both the upper and lower diffuser exits. There is now no doubt both openings are for the diffuser. For cooling, the cokebottle shape does bulge around to form some smaller cooling outlets to the side of the diffuser and for Malaysia they cut open the fairing over the geabrox to let more hot air out.
In his technical review, he has published a different picture of the diffuser.

Thanks.
I can't find Scrab's Photo but this is the old diffuser: (you can see how much the rear bodywork, it's outlets feeding the diffuser, the rear wheels and their winglets, and the whole diffuser, have evolved)

Renault has also modified the diffuser in Melbourne adopting a solution that the Red Bull and STR had last year:

Moreover, they do score some serious points with the fat nose still there!

I'm eager to see how they will perform in Spain with the updated RS27 engine (I have heard rumours it'll implemented for this GP).

Renault's form doesn't surprise me. They were reasonably fast in Jerez and Barcelona... Renault is Renault and remains Reanult even under the control of Genii... and, of course, they will be World champions in 2012 8)

Is this cleaver or what? I expect every team will be rushing to implement this new idea. Turning vanes built in to the brake ducting to tightly control airflow around the front wheels and towards the sidepods! Very nice!

The Toyota had that solution last year ;) (But now Renault have turning vanes only behind or under the brake duct) Mercedes and Mclaren have a similar solution (no winglet in front of the duct.)

I guess I had never seen them go down to deck level before. Pretty interesting especially considering that steering provides a completely different wake pattern to the sidepods and undertray.
