Ah, use importing an stl in sketchup is very time consuming indeed. However I was referring to freecad converting the mesh to a shell, then to a solid. Freecad imports the stl fine, but takes forever to convert the geometry. It takes no time with simpler meshes, but all i want to convert is half a f1 front wing, which is quite complex. I'm going to leave it converting over night and if it's not done by morning, I think I can conclude that the mesh might have a hole or 2 in it

My point was that some of the free software aren't as efficient at working with complex geometry in a timely manner.

Have looked at my model in Netfabb and their are a few issues. I tried fixing them and opening the fixed STL in Sketchup but I am get a model that is smaller in size than the original (total length is like 10mm) and 90% of the model is wireframe without the areas between triangle edges filled in. Very odd. I think it is a Sketchup 2016 issue as I tried the KVRC files and same happened. Will install 2015 alongside for STL import.
Not sure I can fix the issues in time for submission however as some of the problems are my fault and some are to do with the supplied geometry.

Very good point. I've done some more research and have found that SolidWorks also has an option to import stl files as solid bodies, i.e. Convert them in the import process. But I'll have a play around with that tomorrow

Hi!

Since the pre-season race is almost here, we wanted to take the chance to say hello!

so I tried importing as a solid body into solidworks and it said that 'this STL model has too many surfaces, try opening it with the graphics body option'.

I guess i'll have to wait all day for it to import to freecad then...

Welcome Alex! Interesting car. This year I haven't seen yet a bad car, the average level seems to be higher than 2015.

It would be easy to model a STEP into FreeCAD and then exporting to STL.

SketchUp is faster to learn, but it has many limitations in the mechanical field.

There's a reason I haven't showed my car yet. :D

Looks like we will have a very competitive grid this season! That HP Racing car looks very similar to the final version of my car from last season in places.

I have just downloaded the latest run I did of my car from AWS and there is no oneClickCFD_analysis folder. Is this due to divergence?

sketchup pro can export to autocad dwg, and that can be imported into solidworks no problem, for wind tunnel geometry being added etc. but I don't own sketchup pro :(

There's about 10 hours until the deadline for the first round. So far we have entries from:
- Competition Car Engineering
- Mercury Motorsport
- Pure Power Racing
- CAEdevice
- Blindblom
- Talno Racing
- Kineuton
