Mercedes may have made this mode after experience of two drivers battling for the win in Nico and Lewis. Ferrari never had this scenario before in the hybrid era so it just would not occur to them to override the optimal setting for it.

I disagree with this.
It makes perfect sense to be able to override the "optimal" settings at any time and the top teams have been doing it for a long time.

Any suspision what caused the troubles in Malaysia? Two cars with what looked like identical failures. They managed to fix it for Vettel, but unable to prevent it for Raikkonen.

Since they swapped Vettels complete PU before the Q-session, it must have been a part not included in the PU. A piece of wireharness, connecting-panel, or sensor fixed to the chassis.

Maybe the wiring to/from the (McLaren) ECU?

Ferrari are saying that the "standard" used must be changed for the engine regarding the charge air system.
Maybe they wont use band clamps anymore and use proper couplings.
Something just tells me it's some cheap off the shelf part that has been working fine these past 3 years and they may just decide to use some more serious custom hardware.

The engine swapped in before Qualifying had the problem, they found the problem, they then swapped in a 5th power unit before the race since they were already starting at the back. So Sebastian now has 5 engines in his pool vs 4 for Lewis.

Would Vettel be allowed to use the 4-th engine? FIA closed that loophole after Mercedes swapped Hamilton's engine several times at Belgium weekend 2016. So now Vettel engines 1, 2, 3 and 5. Am i wrong in that conclusion?

Fia allowed one motor join engine pool at same weekend.
Vettel can use 1,2,3,4 and 5.

There was no mention of grid penalties for Vettel over the weekend, the rules seem to state that only the last PU installed during a weekend can be used. So Vettel was allowed to change engine without penalty but will not be able to use 4 without further penalties.

If he had grid penalties for the ICE both engines must be available. Otherwise he is being given penalites for only his 4th engine in the pool.
