Because in reality they have a wind tunnel and we don't.

it could be that mclaren couldn't make a thin nose strong enough, and its mercedes who have actually gone aggressive with the design

For all we know, the thinner nose design on the W06 actually gives better flow to the tea-tray. Maybe the thinner design allows for a higher volume of clean air around it to hit the tray rather than a broader design where the air needs to go under the nose. Maybe in the previous seasons, the higher noses made it better to channel air under them rather than around them.

A bigger inlet manifold? some STR9 radiators inside?
Bigger Turbo?

I guess bigger inlet manifold (variable length inlet manifolds in 2015)
Finishing races is important, but racing is more important.

I can't tell if the W06 really has more undecut sidepods. The W06 has more black in this area compared to the W05 which makes it look more undercut at the side view.

There's definitely something going on with the inlet.

The Williams also got fatter there

I'm by no means an expert on this, but here's my take on it; Merc have a thinner nose as it's shorter in length, with the tip hanging above the front wing. A thinner nose is needed to allow more clean air to pass by to the floor of the car. McLaren on the other hand (and Ferrari) have gone for the longer and wider nose, with the tip sitting way out ahead of the front wing. As the car is under YAW (when the downforce is needed) space under the nose opens up allowing more air to pass by and under the nose to the floor. Two different ways to achieve the same thing, hard to say which is best.

Dual intercooler perhaps... left and right pipes coming from the side pods.

I hear through the grapevine that its a new intake manifold design driven by the variable length inlet trumpets.

That was banned for a long time during NA days, is that allowed for turbos?

Yes, but not last year, only allowed from 2015 season.

Yes, banned in 2014 but allowed in 2015. And yes, it makes sense for the enlarged area.

Renault-Motor für 2015 in vielen Bereichen überarbeitet

Dazu wurden variable Ansaugtrichter eingebaut, wie sie 2015 vom Reglement erlaubt sind.

It's been said in the Williams thread that they copied Mercedes's intercooler setup.

It's behind the driver's head. Is that different from last year's placement? Because if so, that would explain the added size
