McLaren have gone through a difficult season, but a proper look at their new MP4-31 suggest they have put in considerable effort to come back from that swiftly.

EB during testing mentioned that there is a strong correlation between on track performance and wind tunnel. Also, we know that McLaren has one of the best simulator in paddock. So it is not surprising to see McLaren do so well on Friday. They can setup the car pretty quickly and get good lap times compared to other mid field teams. But once other teams start going through their data, they seem to catch up and beat us on Saturday.
We saw this in Australia where in FP1 and FP2, both McLaren's were in the top 10. Come Saturday, in FP3 they were 11th and 12th and in Qualifying we ended up 12th and 13th.
While the pace is definitely encouraging, we can move backwards today. Though, I hope not.
obviously there is more to it then what meets the eye, still mclaren using less rearwing for sure, if its because the diffuser and rear aero is extremely efficient, if its because they cant balance out the extra rear df or if its to help the honda pu a bit until they catch up is everyones quess, probably they think this is the best compromise. In testing mclaren used a similar high df rearwing where the front of the main plane was lowered allowing more air to reach
