Mercedes AMG F1 W06

A place to discuss the characteristics of the cars in Formula One, both current as well as historical. Laptimes, driver worshipping and team chatter do not belong here.

Fairly certain the tub is wider than that, and thus, that rule doesn't apply in his case.

Mercedes still ahead of the pack when it comes to directing air around the car, so many more tiny winglets in odd places than other teams.

No one - including Scarbs has ever been able to tell me why the Mercedes has this step/these two levels along the edge of their floor (and have always had it) while all other cars have a flat surface on top.

Anyone?

I can hazard a guess. If there is a y250/bargeboard vortex located on the undercut then the flow crosses the step spanwise in a manner that shed another streamwise vortex in the step(low pressure) that reduce stagnation pressure hence drag of the reartire plus enhance sealing of the top of the floor and reduce tire wake, 3 in one better than shampoo!

They've always had that and no one else does. Another thing I noticed is that they've always had a different type of CF layup in that area than other teams who have a big checkered board pattern CF layup for their floor. I am guessing its really a difference in CF layup that causes them to have a sandwich floor with something in between the top of the floor and top of the diffuser (bottom of the floor).

Back then they have had blowing exhausts, but now what's the reason for doing that?

There seems to be a hole in the external part of the diffuser

I don't see it. There is a cut out beside the wheel, with the rear edge of the cutout incorporating a raised lip. The raised lip may be new for Barcelona, but I haven't made comparisons.
