COTA Austin - construction and infrastructure

Post here all non technical related topics about Formula One. This includes race results, discussions, testing analysis etc. TV coverage and other personal questions should be in Off topic chat.

What do you think of the prospect of a USGP 2012 at Austin Texas

Good thinking. Place has good infra structure and nice climate in winter.

Not good as it has no motor sport tradition in the US.

Uh, yeah. Do you have any reason not to believe them other than "I heard that so-and-so said"?

2 critical work stoppages, for starters, followed by what I'm told by trusted friends who know.

Nothing I've seen or heard in months lends any credibility to COTA's word, and they certainly have done nothing at all to alter that perception with their silent treatment.

When considering how much new tracks in a desert-flat persian gulf country seems to cost the local bully, I cannot see a new road-track in North-America making any financial sense, the NJ semi-street-track seems far more reasonable however.

But MrE couldn't care less, he's been already paid, race or not.

Doh...Not good.

Elroy Road widening won't happen before 2012 race. The hangup? Take a wild guess.

Is that image of Elroy Road where they are planning to move 120 000 visitors in nine months time, a horse trail?

Already bickering over 5-6 million for that?

It's not exactly a horse trail, but it is a poorly built and poorly maintained 2-lane road which needs to be widened to 4 lanes to provide extra traffic capacity and a dedicated lane for emergency vehicle access on race days.

It's been what, 19-20 months since the announcement of this race. It's kinda amazing that this deal hasn't been ironed out LONG ago.

It is kinda amazing to me that they haven't the logistics sorted out yet, nine months from the race?

Oh I don't know. Donnington for one and all those circuits in the Middle and Far East that got built with non-existent government IOUs are now trying to work out how they will continue to be funded.

This is another notch on Bernie's bedpost. That thing will never be ready in nine months. It's an utter joke.

Sorry to let facts get in the way, but the race is on 18th Nov, so that over 10 months ;)

For comparison, here are pics of the India circuit on 12th June, 4 months before the race. I'd say Austin can finish the job on time, especially as US construction capability is more advanced than India (I've worked on projects in both countries).

To put it another way, Austin has 6 months to be in the same state as the India pics below. Easy from a construction point of view, as long as bickering politics doesn't mess it up.

I've also found an image of the circuit in India on Dec 19th 2010, so that's 10 months before the race. So this is the benchmark for how far Austin should have progressed by now. Looks pretty much the same doesn't it?

In India however, they have an almost endless supply of eager workforce, which will work 24/7 if told to and never strikes. Not if they know what's good for them anyway.

Have you been to a construction-site in the US lately richard?

They've got nine months..........

Where India was concerned they had a political commitment to spend whatever it took, and commit whatever resources it took, to get it finished. That is nowhere near being the case in Austin.

Since when has 10th Jan to 18th Nov been 9 months?

Check.... Feb, March, April, May, June, July, Aug, Sept, Oct, Nov. Yup that seems to be 10 months and 8 days.

...

Back to topic, yes I agree it all depends on no interference from politics and egos. However in construction terms its not difficult, certainly not an utter joke.

Donnington was an utter joke.

Unless they wish to put the final touch on the day before MrE arrives, it's 9 months, working in the Texas sun at that. I agree with mun this is an utter joke and from what I've learned from construction efficiency in the deep south...
