That's where I disagree with many about leaving space. If you are on the racing line, why do you have to concede the space and compromise your drive? It is different from a dive bomb where there is no hope to get back on the racing line but to bump the other driver.
Basically because the right you´re defending for one driver to stick in the racing line, also exist for the other driver, so if both stick on the racing line, an accident will occur at any overtaking attempt, except those 100% completed on a straight. That´s the reason when two cars are parallel, both have to leave some space.
Let see it this way, when two cars are parallel, track instantly get narrower for both, as neither of them can use last 2m of track at their opposite side. Otherwise it would be too easy and dangerous to stop any overtaking, just keep driving from edge to edge of the track, anyone trying to get into the racing line will be forced to go out of track, or will crash
