Driver salaries may be next in cost cutting efforts
The salaries of Formula One drivers could be the next area of the sport to be hit by the economic downturn, after a recent regulation overhaul to reduce competing costs for teams. Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali believes that cutting costs should not pertain only to team operations, but that drivers may have to be paid less in order for teams to trully reduce costs.
Domenicali told 'Autosprint' in a recent interview: "I think that in the following months there will be a major revolution, also with the drivers, as far as retainers are concerned."
When asked about recent signings of high salary contracts in the sport, he responded, "I'm convinced that this issue will soon be discussed among all the teams and with every driver." Possibly meaning that the Italian team repents having agreed to pay Kimi Raikkonen such a high amount until 2010, especially with the KERS budget having been exceeded recently.
