Button wins at Turkey, Red Bull complete the podium
Jenson Button has added one to his tally of Formula One victories after dominating the Turkish Grand Prix. As soon as he got into the lead in lap one, there was nobody who could really do anything about him. Red Bull's Mark Webber finished second while Sebastian Vettel is third.
The temperatures were high again with the track as high 50°C when Vettel took place on the first spot of the grid. Button and Webber put their cars slightly turned towards the cars that are on the cleaner side of the track.
When the lights go out, the men on the front row take off quickly and are not threatened by anyone, partly thanks to Barrichello completely missing his start. Mark Webber therefore took 3rd place, followed by Trulli and Rosberg who fought his way up.
Behind Rosberg an intense battle took place with the Ferrari's and Alonso, the latter eventually ending up in between the red cars. Robert Kubica later on also profited from the battling and managed to get by Raikkonen.
In lap 6, Fisichela is in the pits and looks likely to abandon from the race with a technical problem. Rubens Barrichello on the other hand is still running but is stuck in 12th position behind the KERS powered McLaren of Kovalainen.
The following laps showed a beefed up battle between Kovalainen and Barrichello as the Finn slightly missed his braking point at the end of the back straight. He passed in the slow complex but got repassed on the start-finish line. The Brazilian was however a little bit too impatient and attemped another pass half a lap further but spun as the cars touched. Barrichello dropped down behind Hamilton.
From there on he quickly regained positions on Hamilton and Piquet, but when closing up on Sutil he was again too optimistic and lost a part of his front wing. That same lap he entered the pit for a new front wing, and at the same time it emerged that his Brawn BGP001 doesn't have the 7th gear active, making it extremely difficult for him to enjoy the rest of this race.
In lap 14, Alonso is the first to enter the pits for a regular stop as he switched from the option tyres to primes. Vettel followed suit one lap later. He was down 6 seconds on Button after losing first place halfway in the first lap due to a minor mistake.
Button makes his stop 2 laps latest and rejoins in 3rd place, not far behind Nico Rosberg. When both men in front then made their stops, Vettel was almost 7 seconds behind the Briton.
By lap 25, Vettel has closed the gap with Button completely. Vettel took a little less fuel at his pitstop and pits 4 laps later after finding it impossible to overtake Button. He rejoins the track in 3rd position and is being told to really push all the way through to make a chance for the win.
Mark Webber meanwhile is 13s behind Button, continuing a constant pace with a more conservative pitstop strategy. In 5th place meanwhile is Glock who is running an extremely long first stint after having started from 13th position.
The middle part of the race proved a bit sterile. Vettel is unable to close into Button and hence had no choice to end up in the lead even after Button's stop 14 laps from the end of the race.
Kazuki Nakajima then sees his race destroyed as his team is unable to fix the left front wheel onto his car during his stop. When the team finally sort out the problem, he is down to 13th place.
10 laps from the end, Piquet and Vettel are into the pitlane to make their final stops and fit the option tyres as required. Piquet rejoins in 16th position while Vettel is 3rd, 3.5 seconds behind his teammate.
At the same time, Barrichello abandons the race inside the pit box, most likely to be able to fit a new gearbox without being imposed a penalty of 5 grid places at the next Grand Prix.
4 laps from the end, Vettel is only 1.8 seconds behind Webber but he is ordered to save his car. Probably the team wants to avoid a fight between the two, risking both of their cars to not finish.
