New Regulations To Benefit Ferrari?
It has been suggested that the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro team will benefit quite a bit from the new regulations. Ferrari was quick to praise the new regulations and it would seem that the tyre rules specifically will indeed aid Ferrari in winning again.
Last year's tyre regulations clearly did not play into Ferrari's hands as they had to do all of the work for Bridgestone and Michelin had a larger group to work with. The new rules will now enable Bridgestone to use the general type of tyre they had been so successful with during their championship years with Ferrari. Fiat and Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo was quite outspoken about the previous rules and now he is quite pleased with the new regulations on tyres and qualifying.
"Being unable to change tyres made races more dangerous. The drivers were forced to drive like taxis over the closing laps. It seems to me to be a good solution as a spectacle and a challenge."
This of course doesn't mean that Ferrari will necessarily dominate the sport once again, more that Montezemolo thinks the new regulations are what the fans deserve. Despite this, Formula 1's commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone, felt he needed to clarify the situation on the new rules aiding Ferrari.
"The regulations won't be able to help Michael Schumacher. I can only say that thanks to these regulations, both tyre manufacturers will have to devise new compounds and constructions to compensate for the loss of engine power."
