No Belgian GP in 2006
The Belgian news agency Belga has reported that there will be no Belgian GP at Spa Francorshamps in 2006. Wallonian politician Serge Kubla who signed the contract last year confirmed that to the parliament today. He thereby confirmed a message on radio station Bel-RTL. Kubla bases his statement on news he received from around F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone.
There are however still talks ongoing between the ground around Ecclestone and the Wallonion government. These talks are mostly about the very much needed investments for the circuit. The paddocks need upgrades as they are no longer conform to today's F1 standards. The former minister of economy Kubla realises that time passes by and that it becomes impossible to have the changes done in time for 17 september, the date that the race is to be held.
The political game however continues in Belgium and more specifically the Wallonian government. The fraction leader of the MR (French speaking liberalists) accuses the government that it should have reacted in juli of 2005 when financial problems arose concerning the organisation of the Belgian Grand Prix.
While it is still in doubt, chances seem to become smaller and smaller for a Belgian GP in 2006. However, as Bernie was linked to the organisation of the next 6 years, it appears that the 2007 edition is not in danger.
