Alonso on top in dry final practice

Fernando Alonso went fastest in the first session at Silverstone held on a dry track. The teams did a lot of running while some cars got caught out by the wet patches that were still present in some corners. Jenson Button went second fastest, ahead of Romain Grosjean.

At the beginning of the session, the track is dry with still some wet patches here and there, including those at turn 13.

After a warm-up lap, many drivers are out immediately for some dry tyre running as more rain is expected soon. The Saubers and Di Resta soon found the wet patch in Becketts dangerous as they all went off the track, fortunately without damage. Di Resta was stuck for a minute but then able to continue.

When the rain entered the track 10 minutes into the session, it proved light and short lived, allowing all cars to continue on their dry weather tyres. This certainly pleases Caterham and Marussia as their cars have considerable update packages here at Silverstone.

20 minutes into the session, Charles Pic comes to a halt on the racing line, requiring a red flag to clear the car from the track.

After the short break, the session is green flagged 32 minutes from the end. Raikkonen is the first to kick off again, followed by nearly the entire field of cars in the next few minutes.

As the track nearly dried everywhere, Lewis Hamilton goes fastest on the option tyres, ahead of his teammate and Sergio Pérez.

With 15 minutes to go, Alonso went quickest to improve on Grosjean's time. The Spaniard however was pushing a little bit too much the next lap and spun in the ultimate corner after touching a bit too much kerb. He got stuck in the middle of the track and only managed to get his car going again 40 seconds later.

Another 5 minutes later Kamui Kobayashi first went through and half a lap later Pérez does the same and loses his front wing.

Pic then came to a standstill yet again, now just before Stowe corner. And just like last time, he did not pull off the track, despite his team asking him to. As the marshalls pushed his car, even then it took him a while to realise he should steer right to put his car into the grass.

With nobody at the front improving their laptimes, this means Alonso tops the first dry session at Silverstone.
