Massa leads first test at Silverstone
Felipe Massa recorded the fastest time during the first of two testing days at Silverstone. He set his time halfway through the morning and was not beaten, even though Daniel Ricciardo came to within 0.006s of the Brazilian's best.
On a day where temperatures were considerably cooler than during the Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg went second quickest, ahead of Adrian Sutil.
Fifth fastest was Jules Bianchi, completing 108 laps in the Marussia before driving the Ferrari F14T tomorrow, replacing Kimi Räikkönen who is not entirely fit yet. Pedro De La Rosa was in the car today for Ferrari, driving with number 28, a legendary number for the Scuderia. The Spaniard went 10th fastest, only quicker than today's slowest man on track, GP2 racer Will Stevens in the Caterham.
McLaren reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne was in the MP4-29 for the second time, completing 71 laps and ending the day 6th fastest. Sergio Pérez set the 7th fastest time while Jean-Eric Vergne 8th and Maldonado 10th.
Many teams proved busy today with pitot arrays and flowviz paint to verify aerodynamic solutions. Lotus on the other hand were repeatedly seen running on the intermediate tyre and once ran a number of laps with inters at the front and soft slick tyres fitted on the rear axle.
Ferrari and Marussia meanwhile were not able to do any performance testing whatsoever as they were on duty for a day of tyre testing with Pirelli. Red Bull Racing and Lotus are scheduled to complete tyre testing tomorrow.
