Nico Rosberg proved the fastest man in the first free practice session for the Malaysian Grand Prix while team mate Lewis Hamilton was unable to record a time due to a technical issue. Ferrari once again provided the stiffest competition, with Raikkonen and Vettel going second and third fastest.

Lewis Hamilton only managed 4 laps and came to a halt at turn 9 before being able to set a time. The Brit told his team he could still make it to the pits, but to make sure the racing engine did not get damaged, he was asked to park it alongside the track.
