Ferrari will always be in my heart – Alonso
Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso is always happy when he recalls his time at Ferrari. He conceded that the fabled Italian squad will always be part of his heart after his five-year-long spell in scarlet red.
Fernando Alonso joined Ferrari in 2010. He completed five seasons for the Scuderia and lost the title in 2010 and 2012 in the dying moments of the last race. As the defeats of those campaigns did not vanish into thin air completely with time and the new hybrid engine era brought another disappointment, the two-time champion decided to leave the Maranello-based team.
“I could have driven for Ferrari for two other years. However, I had the feeling that it was high time to walk away.”
The Oviedo-born racer admitted that losing the titles two times meant a setback which was hard to swallow. However, he is still proud of having been part of the most traditional and fabled car brand of the world.
“That became more stressful with every year passing because we could not win. The decision to part ways with the team was the right one as I took it in the right moment. It is unimportant which results the team achieved in 2015 and 2016 or will achieve in the future. I had a fantastic time at Ferrari and I wanted to stop there with that fantastic feeling.”
Alonso thinks that his current team McLaren-Honda is the best place to be at for the distant future. The Spaniard is sure that the Anglo-Japanese team is the only one which could hunt the currently dominant Mercedes down.
“You either drive for Mercedes or you drive a McLaren-Honda in the future. We have to improve step by step and hope that we have a competitive engine and chassis. The new rules allow us new ideas.”
Despite to the optimism, Alonso is aware of the hazard that new concepts could also go wrong as the new rules permit many ways for interpretation.
“This can, however, be completely the opposite and our concept can be a complete blunder. However, if we had the same rules next year, we probably could not fight with Mercedes. Even if we had the same power as their engine has, Mercedes is a bit too far ahead of the others in terms of aerodynamics,” added Alonso.
