Ferrari capitalizes on Vettels misfortunes
Ferrari decided to change several elements of the power unit of Sebastian Vettel’s car after the German encountered technical issues in the qualifying session for the Singapore GP and was not able to set a competitive time.
Sebastian Vettel had a short qualifying session yesterday as he was struck by technical problems. A part of the right-rear suspension suffered a fatal breakage which meant he could not set a competitive lap time to wrestle himself into the second practice session and give his technical team time to fix the problem.
The change of the broken part takes around ten minutes, but the team had only three minutes left because Vettel was sent late onto the track in Q1.
As the German was about to take multiple penalties for power unit part changes later in the season because he was on the fifth piece of three components, Ferrari decided to make the change now.
That means the quadruple world champion gets a fresh internal combustion engine, turbocharger and KERS unit. Even if it meant a 20-place grid drop, the German’s position won’t change as he would have started the race from the last position anyway.
The Italian team also replaces Vettel’s gear-box for a new one for today’s race.
