Tyre selection for the US Grand Prix
Ferrari proved to be the bravest squad from the top-runner teams once again after F1's sole tyre manufacturer Pirelli announced the individual tyre selections for the forthcoming US GP which takes place in Austin next weekend.
Pirelli nominated the medium, soft and supersoft compounds for the high-speed track of Austin. The two hardest compounds from the trio brought to the US GP are nominated as the race tyres. That means teams have to run at least one stint on either the soft or the medium in the race.
This means a greater tactical freedom after the Japanese GP where only one set, the hard compound was selected as the race tyre.
The two Ferraris, the two Saubers and Grosjean proved to be the bravest in terms of tyre selection as they all ordered seven sets from the supersofts and only one from the mediums.
The driver with the most supersofts is Sergio Perez which comes as a surprise as the Force India drivers have tended to order the least sets from the softest compound available on a venue so far this season. To balance that out, Perez ordered only two sets of softs which leaves him with three sets of mediums.
Red Bull have plenty of mediums while Mercedes plenty of softs which means the four drivers are expected to spend much of the Friday's outings on the two harder compounds available and complete only one stint on the supersofts in FP2 to save up one set for FP3 and four for the qualifying and the race.
Jolyon Palmer stands out with his wealth of mediums as the former GP2 champion ordered five sets of the hardest compound.
